Over multiple clutches, this data reveals patterns that guide management decisions. A pair that consistently produces infertile eggs may have a compatibility issue, age-related fertility decline, or an underlying health condition affecting sperm or egg quality. A hen that produces thin-shelled eggs despite adequate calcium supplementation may have a metabolic disorder affecting shell gland function.

Band all squabs with closed aluminum leg bands of the appropriate size for Senegal Doves within the first week of life, while the foot is still small enough for the band to slide over the toes. Closed bands are permanent identifiers that cannot be removed without cutting and serve as proof of captive breeding. Record the band number, hatch date, parentage, and any distinguishing characteristics for each squab. This record-keeping discipline may seem excessive for a common species, but it becomes invaluable as your breeding program grows and you need to verify lineage before making pairing decisions.

Color mutations exist in captive Senegal Dove populations, including pied, fawn, white, and tangerine variants. Breeding Ethics and Population Responsibility

The decision to breed Senegal Doves carries ethical obligations that extend beyond the immediate pair and their squabs. Senegal Doves are prolific breeders capable of producing multiple clutches per year, and a single pair can generate a substantial number of offspring over a breeding career. Before initiating any breeding program, honest assessment of your capacity to house, care for, or responsibly place the resulting birds is a non-negotiable first step.

Consider the demand for Senegal Doves in your region. While they are charming and manageable companion birds, they do not command the market interest of parrots or popular finch species, and finding suitable homes for surplus doves can be challenging. Breeding without a plan for the offspring is irresponsible regardless of the species. If you intend to sell or rehome squabs, establish relationships with reputable pet shops, aviary keepers, or individual buyers before the squabs hatch, not after.

Limit clutch frequency to protect the breeding pair's health. Two to three clutches per year is a sustainable pace for most Senegal Dove hens, with rest periods of at least six to eight weeks between clutches. Finally, never release captive-bred Senegal Doves into the wild. While the species is widespread and adaptable across its native range in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, releasing captive birds into non-native environments can introduce diseases to wild populations, disrupt local ecosystems, and subject the released birds to suffering and death in an environment they are not equipped to survive. Captive-bred doves lack the survival skills, parasite resistance, and predator awareness of their wild counterparts, and release is not a responsible alternative to finding appropriate captive homes.
