The Timneh African Grey is a compact, muscular parrot whose dietary requirements reflect both its high intelligence and its West African forest origins. Weighing between 275 and 375 grams and measuring nine to eleven inches in length, the Timneh is noticeably smaller than its Congo relative, and this size difference has practical consequences for portion sizing and caloric targets. Overfeeding a Timneh the same volumes appropriate for a larger Congo Grey is a common mistake that leads to gradual weight gain and the cascade of health problems that accompanies obesity in parrots.
Like all African Greys, the Timneh is particularly vulnerable to hypocalcemia, a condition in which blood calcium levels fall below safe thresholds and trigger symptoms ranging from muscle tremors and poor coordination to life-threatening seizures. This susceptibility is not merely a captive-diet artifact but appears to have a genuine physiological basis within the species. Calcium management is therefore not optional or secondary when planning a Timneh's diet — it is a central concern that should influence pellet selection, fresh food choices, and supplementation decisions from the day a bird arrives in the home.
Vitamin A is another nutrient of outsized importance for this species. Timnehs fed primarily on seed mixes frequently develop subclinical vitamin A deficiency long before visible symptoms appear. By the time respiratory problems, white plaques in the mouth, or dull feather quality become obvious, the deficiency has usually been present for months or years. Building a diet rich in beta-carotene-containing vegetables and high-quality pellets addresses this vulnerability proactively rather than reactively.
The Timneh's smaller body size also means that its margin for nutritional error is narrower than that of a larger parrot. A macaw can tolerate a few days of suboptimal nutrition without immediate consequence, but a Timneh's faster metabolism and lower body reserves make consistent dietary quality more critical. This is not a species that does well on a casual or improvised feeding approach — deliberate planning and quality ingredients are essential to long-term health.
