Both the male and the female should exhibit a well-muscled, smoothly contoured body profile with no visible spine ridges or hip bones, which would indicate insufficient reserves, and no excessive lateral fat deposits, which would suggest obesity. The female's reserves are particularly important because egg production and deposition impose enormous metabolic demands, drawing heavily on calcium, protein, and fat stores over a period of several weeks. A female that enters the breeding season underweight or nutritionally depleted risks producing infertile or thin-shelled eggs, experiencing egg retention or dystocia, and suffering a prolonged and difficult post-breeding recovery.
In the months leading up to the breeding season, both animals should be fed consistently to build reserves without inducing obesity. Slightly increasing feeding frequency — from once every ten to fourteen days to once every seven to ten days — for two to three months prior to the cooling period provides additional caloric and nutritional input that supports the upcoming reproductive effort. Prey items enriched with calcium and vitamin supplements can be offered occasionally to bolster the female's mineral reserves.
