Pacas are relatively long-lived rodents, with well-maintained captive individuals routinely reaching 12 to 16 years of age. The transition from mature adult to senior is gradual rather than sudden, and there is no single event that marks the boundary. Most keepers begin to notice age-related changes between 9 and 12 years, though the onset and pace of aging vary considerably between individuals depending on genetics, lifetime diet, activity level, and overall health history. Recognizing the early signs of aging allows keepers to make proactive adjustments to husbandry practices before minor issues compound into serious problems.
The most common early indicators of aging in pacas include a gradual reduction in overall activity level, increased time spent resting in hides during the animal's normally active nocturnal period, and a subtle stiffening of gait. The paca may be slower to rise from a resting position, take longer to reach full speed when moving through its enclosure, and show reduced enthusiasm for behaviors that were once routine, such as swimming, digging, or investigating enrichment items. These changes can be easy to miss if the keeper does not have a strong baseline understanding of the individual animal's normal behavior patterns, which underscores the value of maintaining detailed behavioral records throughout the animal's life.
Coat quality often declines with age. The glossy, tightly patterned fur of a prime adult may become duller, coarser, or thinner in a senior animal. The characteristic white spots may appear less distinct against a coat that has faded from rich reddish-brown to a more washed-out grayish-brown. The skin may lose elasticity, and small bumps or lumps may appear on the body surface. While many such lumps are benign lipomas or cysts, any new growth should be evaluated by a veterinarian to rule out malignancy, as neoplastic disease does occur in aging rodents.
Weight changes in either direction are significant findings in a senior paca. Gradual weight loss despite normal appetite can indicate dental disease, malabsorption, chronic kidney disease, or other internal pathology. Conversely, weight gain in a less active senior animal can accelerate the development of arthritis, hepatic lipidosis, and cardiovascular strain. More frequent weight monitoring, moving from monthly to biweekly or even weekly weigh-ins, helps detect trends early. The target is not a specific number on the scale but rather the maintenance of a stable, appropriate body condition in which the ribs remain palpable and the animal maintains muscle tone over its hindquarters.
