Most keepers begin to notice age-related changes between 9 and 12 years, though the onset and pace of aging vary considerably between individuals depending on genetics, lifetime diet, activity level, and overall health history. Recognizing the early signs of aging allows keepers to make proactive adjustments to husbandry practices before minor issues compound into serious problems.

The most common early indicators of aging in pacas include a gradual reduction in overall activity level, increased time spent resting in hides during the animal's normally active nocturnal period, and a subtle stiffening of gait. The paca may be slower to rise from a resting position, take longer to reach full speed when moving through its enclosure, and show reduced enthusiasm for behaviors that were once routine, such as swimming, digging, or investigating enrichment items. These changes can be easy to miss if the keeper does not have a strong baseline understanding of the individual animal's normal behavior patterns, which underscores the value of maintaining detailed behavioral records throughout the animal's life.

Coat quality often declines with age. The glossy, tightly patterned fur of a prime adult may become duller, coarser, or thinner in a senior animal. The characteristic white spots may appear less distinct against a coat that has faded from rich reddish-brown to a more washed-out grayish-brown. Signs of arthritis include reluctance to move, a shuffling or stilted gait, difficulty rising from rest, and a reduction in activities that require flexibility such as grooming the hindquarters. Regular physical examination with attention to any new lumps, changes in body contour, unexplained weight loss, or behavioral changes helps detect tumors while they are still treatable. The decision to pursue surgery, palliative care, or no treatment depends on the tumor type, location, the animal's overall health status, and the risks associated with anesthesia in a geriatric patient.

Environmental Modifications for Comfort

The enclosure that served an active adult paca well may need significant modification to accommodate the physical limitations of a senior animal. The overarching principle is to reduce the physical demands of navigating the living space while preserving opportunities for the animal to express natural behaviors at its own pace. Ramps or gradual slopes should replace any stepped or elevated surfaces, as arthritic joints make jumping and climbing painful. If the enclosure includes a water feature, the entry point should be made as gradual as possible so the animal can enter and exit without abrupt weight-bearing transitions.

Substrate depth and composition may need adjustment. A senior paca with arthritis in its forelimbs may find deep, loose substrate difficult to walk through, which discourages movement and can accelerate muscle atrophy. Reducing the substrate depth to two to three inches, or using a firmer, more compacted surface such as packed soil or rubber matting in pathways between key areas like the hide, food station, and water source, allows the animal to move more comfortably. Thicker, softer bedding material cushions arthritic joints and helps the animal maintain core body temperature, which senior animals regulate less efficiently. Fleece pads, thick layers of shredded paper, or clean straw provide insulation and cushioning. The hide entrance may need to be widened if the animal has difficulty entering due to stiffness, and the interior should allow the animal to stretch out fully rather than forcing it into a curled position.

Temperature management becomes more important as the paca ages. Senior animals are more susceptible to both cold stress and overheating than their younger counterparts, and the enclosure should be maintained within a narrower temperature band of approximately 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Drafts should be eliminated, and supplemental heating in the form of a ceramic heat emitter or radiant panel near the resting area provides a warm zone the animal can access voluntarily. Evaluating quality of life in a senior paca requires ongoing, systematic observation rather than periodic snapshots. Unlike companion animals such as dogs and cats, for which validated quality-of-life scales have been published, there are no standardized assessment tools specific to pacas or large rodents. Keepers must therefore develop individualized criteria based on the specific animal's personality, established behavioral repertoire, and known health conditions. A simple framework that assesses five domains — comfort, appetite, mobility, engagement, and hygiene — on a recurring basis provides a practical structure for tracking changes over time.

Comfort encompasses freedom from pain and distress. A paca in comfort rests in relaxed postures, does not flinch or vocalize when moving, and transitions smoothly between rest and activity. Signs of discomfort include hunched posture, reluctance to shift positions during rest, grinding teeth loudly and persistently outside of feeding contexts, and flinching or withdrawing when touched in specific body regions. Pain in rodents is notoriously difficult to assess because these animals evolved to conceal vulnerability from predators, which means that overt signs of pain typically indicate more severe suffering than would produce the same behavioral display in a domestic carnivore.

Appetite and weight stability are among the most objective metrics available. A senior paca that continues to eat a normal variety and volume of food and maintains a stable body weight is, by these measures, doing well. Declining food intake, progressive weight loss, or the development of strong food preferences that exclude previously accepted items all warrant investigation and may signal pain, dental disease, or organ dysfunction. Daily food consumption tracking, even as simple as noting what was offered and what remains, creates a dataset that reveals trends invisible to casual observation.

Engagement with the environment reflects cognitive and emotional well-being. A senior paca with good quality of life should still show interest in its surroundings, respond to the keeper's presence in its characteristic way, investigate novel enrichment items at least briefly, and maintain its established activity patterns during its active hours even if the intensity and duration have decreased. An animal that withdraws from all interaction, ceases exploring, and spends its normally active periods motionless in the hide is communicating a significant decline that should prompt veterinary consultation and an honest conversation about whether the current management plan is adequate or whether further intervention or humane end-of-life decisions are needed.
