Unlike the blind, hairless neonates produced by rats, mice, and dormice, a newborn paca is fully furred, has its eyes open, and can stand and walk within an hour of delivery. This precocial development is an adaptation to the species' solitary, ground-dwelling lifestyle in the forests of Central and South America, where predation pressure demands that offspring become mobile as quickly as possible. A typical litter consists of a single pup, though twins occur occasionally, and birth weight generally falls between 600 and 900 grams, making the neonatal paca far larger than most rodent newborns.

The mother delivers in a sheltered burrow or nesting area, and the birthing process itself is usually swift. The dam will lick the pup clean of birth membranes immediately, stimulating circulation and encouraging the pup to begin moving. In captive settings, keepers should prepare a clean, secluded nesting enclosure well before the expected delivery date. Straw, hay, or shredded paper bedding at a depth of several inches allows the mother to construct a comfortable nest. The enclosure should be positioned in a quiet area of the facility, away from foot traffic, loud equipment, and the scent or sound of potential predators such as dogs or large cats.

Despite their advanced development, newborn pacas are not fully independent. They rely on the mother's milk for nutrition and on her body heat during rest periods, particularly at night when ambient temperatures drop. The pup will begin attempting to nurse within the first one to two hours after birth. Because pacas produce only one or two pups per litter, the mother's milk supply is concentrated and calorie-dense, designed to support rapid growth in a small number of offspring rather than spreading resources across a large litter. Nursing and Nutritional Needs

Paca milk is among the richest produced by any rodent, with high concentrations of fat and protein that fuel the pup's rapid postnatal growth. The pup nurses frequently during the first week, typically latching on whenever the mother rests in the nest. Because pacas are nocturnal, most nursing bouts occur during the evening and overnight hours, with the mother spending daytime periods resting alongside or draped over the pup. Keepers who check on the pair during the day may find both animals sleeping and should not mistake daytime inactivity for a nursing failure.

The mother's dietary needs increase substantially during lactation. Her regular diet of fruits, vegetables, tubers, and high-fiber pellets should be supplemented with additional calorie-dense foods. Sweet potato, banana, papaya, and cooked squash provide energy and micronutrients. A small amount of high-quality rodent or herbivore pellet formulated for breeding animals can also be offered to ensure adequate protein and calcium intake. Fresh, clean water must be available at all times, and consumption should be monitored because a lactating paca will drink considerably more than a non-lactating adult.

In the rare event that the mother cannot nurse, whether due to mastitis, injury, or rejection of the pup, hand-rearing a neonatal paca is more feasible than with many smaller rodent species, owing to the pup's size and precocial development. A goat milk replacer or a commercial herbivore milk substitute can serve as a temporary formula. Feedings should be offered via a small bottle or syringe every three to four hours during the first week, transitioning to every five to six hours as the pup grows. The formula should be warmed to approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit before each feeding, and the pup should be held in an upright position to reduce the risk of aspiration.

The weaning process begins surprisingly early relative to the paca's overall lifespan. By two weeks of age, the pup will start showing interest in the solid foods available to the mother, sniffing and mouthing pieces of fruit or vegetable. By three to four weeks, solid food intake increases substantially, and the pup's reliance on milk diminishes. Physical Development in the First Weeks

Because paca pups are born precocial, the most dramatic developmental milestones that occupy the first weeks of life in altricial species have already been achieved by the time of birth. The pup's eyes are open, its fur is present, and its limbs are functional. The developmental trajectory of the first few weeks is therefore focused on growth, coordination refinement, and the maturation of sensory and digestive systems rather than the opening of eyes or emergence of fur. Weight gain is the primary metric of healthy development during this period, and a well-nourished pup should gain steadily, reaching approximately double its birth weight by the end of the second week.

During the first week, the pup's movements become increasingly coordinated. At birth, locomotion is somewhat unsteady, with the pup capable of walking but prone to stumbling on uneven surfaces. By day three to five, gait stability improves markedly, and the pup can follow the mother short distances within the enclosure. The distinctive spotted coat pattern that characterizes adult pacas is visible from birth and does not change substantially during the neonatal period, though the overall color may deepen slightly as the fur grows denser.

The second week brings more confident exploration. The pup will venture away from the nest for increasing periods, investigating enclosure features such as water dishes, substrate textures, and solid food offerings. Hearing and vision, both functional at birth, continue to sharpen, and the pup becomes more responsive to environmental stimuli. Startle reflexes are pronounced during this period, and sudden noises or movements can cause the pup to bolt for cover, a behavior rooted in the species' anti-predator strategies. Keepers should minimize sudden disturbances to avoid chronic stress during this sensitive developmental window.

By the third and fourth weeks, the pup is highly mobile, capable of running, turning sharply, and beginning to exhibit the powerful leaping ability that adult pacas use to evade predators. Teeth development progresses as well, with the incisors and premolars sufficiently erupted to allow the pup to gnaw on fibrous plant material. The digestive system matures to handle increasing proportions of solid food, and the cecum, which plays a critical role in fiber fermentation for this hindgut-fermenting species, becomes increasingly active. Monitoring fecal output during this transition provides useful information about digestive health; droppings should be formed, consistent in color, and free of mucus or blood.

Temperature and Housing Requirements

Newborn pacas benefit from their precocial development when it comes to thermoregulation, but they are still less efficient at maintaining core body temperature than adults. The nesting area should be maintained at a stable temperature between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit for the first two weeks. In tropical or subtropical climates where pacas are native, this range is often achieved passively, but keepers in temperate regions may need supplemental heating. A ceramic heat emitter mounted above the enclosure or a radiant heat panel positioned on one wall provides warmth without introducing light that would disrupt the nocturnal activity pattern of both mother and pup.

The enclosure for a mother and neonatal pup should be spacious enough to allow the mother to move freely but contained enough to prevent the pup from wandering into hazardous areas. A solid-walled pen measuring at least four feet by six feet, with walls at least three feet high, serves well for the first few weeks. Pacas are strong and can jump surprisingly high even at a young age, so secure lids or sufficiently tall barriers are essential. The floor should be covered with a deep layer of soft, absorbent bedding such as kiln-dried hardwood shavings, hay, or shredded paper. Cedar and pine shavings should be avoided due to the aromatic oils that can irritate the respiratory system.

A secluded nesting box or hide within the enclosure is critical. Pacas are burrowing animals by nature, and the mother will be most comfortable and least stressed if she has a dark, enclosed space in which to rest with her pup. A wooden box with an entry opening large enough for the mother to pass through comfortably, lined with additional bedding, serves this purpose. The box should be positioned in the quietest corner of the enclosure, oriented so that the opening faces away from the primary source of human activity.

Water features require careful consideration during the neonatal period. Adult pacas are semi-aquatic and strong swimmers, but a very young pup can be at risk of drowning in deep water. If the enclosure includes a water source for the mother, it should be shallow enough that the pup can stand in it or access only at the edges. A heavy, low-sided ceramic dish is safer than a deep bowl during the first few weeks. As the pup grows and gains coordination, a shallow wading area can be gradually introduced, but full swimming access should be delayed until the pup is at least four to five weeks old and demonstrating confident, voluntary entry into water.

Early Socialization and Handling

Pacas are naturally solitary and somewhat skittish animals, and early socialization plays a decisive role in determining how tractable an individual will be throughout its life. The window for establishing comfort with human contact opens during the first weeks after birth and narrows considerably as the animal matures. However, socialization efforts must be balanced against the mother's need for security and the pup's vulnerability to stress. Rushing the process can produce an outcome opposite to the intended one, creating a pup that associates human presence with fear rather than safety.

During the first week, socialization should be limited to indirect exposure. The keeper's voice, scent, and routine movements around the enclosure allow both the mother and pup to acclimate to human presence without direct physical contact. Speaking in a calm, consistent tone during feeding times creates a positive association. Placing a worn piece of clothing near but not inside the nesting box introduces the keeper's scent gradually. These low-intensity exposures lay the groundwork for the more direct handling that follows.

Direct handling can begin during the second week if the mother is calm and tolerant. The keeper should enter the enclosure slowly, allow the mother to move away voluntarily, and then gently scoop the pup using both hands, supporting the body fully. Initial sessions should be brief, lasting no more than two to three minutes, and should involve calm holding rather than active manipulation. The pup may vocalize or struggle initially, which is a normal response. If the pup shows extreme distress, including violent thrashing, high-pitched alarm calls, or attempts to bite, the session should be ended immediately and the pup returned to the nest. Repeated short sessions are far more effective than fewer, longer ones in building the pup's tolerance.

By the third and fourth weeks, a well-socialized pup should accept handling with minimal resistance and may begin to show curiosity about the keeper, sniffing hands and clothing voluntarily. This is the ideal time to introduce a broader range of experiences, including being held by different people, exposure to different rooms or outdoor areas in a secure carrier, and gentle grooming with a soft brush. Pacas that receive consistent, positive handling during this critical period are markedly easier to manage for veterinary examinations, enclosure maintenance, and general husbandry throughout their lives. Animals that miss this window often remain flighty and defensive, requiring significant patience and management as adults.
