Pacas reach sexual maturity between eight and twelve months of age, though full physical maturity is not achieved until the animal is approximately 18 to 24 months old. This distinction is important because breeding a female before she has completed her skeletal and muscular development places her at increased risk for complications during pregnancy and delivery. Males tend to mature slightly later than females and may not produce viable sperm consistently until they are over a year old. A responsible breeding program delays first mating until both animals are physically mature, healthy, and of appropriate body weight.
The female paca is polyestrous, cycling repeatedly throughout the year without a defined breeding season in captive environments where photoperiod and temperature remain relatively constant. The estrous cycle averages approximately 30 days in length, though individual variation is common and cycles may range from 25 to 35 days. The period of receptivity, or estrus, lasts roughly 24 to 48 hours within each cycle. Detecting estrus externally can be challenging because pacas do not display the dramatic behavioral changes seen in some other species. Subtle indicators include a slight swelling of the vulva, increased restlessness during the nocturnal active period, and a greater willingness to tolerate the proximity of a male.
Male pacas are capable of breeding year-round once they reach maturity. The testes are positioned internally, which is typical of hystricomorph rodents, making external assessment of reproductive status less straightforward than in species with scrotal testes. Males ready to breed often show increased scent-marking activity, heightened territorial behavior, and a distinctive low-frequency vocalization during the nighttime hours. Semen quality can be assessed by a veterinarian experienced in exotic animal reproduction if there are concerns about male fertility, though this procedure requires sedation and specialized equipment.
Before initiating a breeding program, keepers must consider the genetic background of both animals. Inbreeding depression is a genuine risk in captive populations that are often derived from a limited founder stock. Maintaining records of lineage, consulting with other breeders and institutional studbook managers where available, and avoiding pairings between closely related individuals are fundamental to producing healthy offspring and contributing positively to the captive population. Animals with known hereditary health issues, chronic disease, or behavioral problems that would make them poor parents or difficult to place should not be bred.
