A planned, calm separation before tensions escalate is far better for both animals than an emergency separation after an injury.

The newly independent juvenile should be housed alone in its own enclosure. Pacas are solitary by nature, and unlike gregarious rodent species such as guinea pigs or degus, they do not benefit from the companionship of unrelated conspecifics. Attempting to house two juvenile pacas together almost invariably results in territorial conflict, even between siblings. The juvenile's enclosure should be set up as a smaller version of an adult habitat, with appropriate hides, substrate, food and water stations, and enrichment items, allowing the young animal to establish its own territory and routines.

This transitional period is also when the keeper's investment in early socialization pays dividends or its absence becomes apparent. A juvenile paca that was handled regularly and gently during its first weeks will approach this phase with a baseline comfort around humans that makes husbandry tasks manageable. An under-socialized juvenile, by contrast, may become increasingly difficult to handle as it grows larger, faster, and more powerful. Juvenile Diet and Nutritional Management

A juvenile paca's diet should mirror the adult diet in composition while accounting for the increased caloric and nutritional demands of rapid growth. Pacas are strict herbivores with a strong preference for fruits, tubers, and succulent plant material, and the juvenile period is the time to establish the dietary variety that will serve the animal throughout its life. A base diet of high-fiber herbivore pellets provides consistent nutrition and ensures adequate intake of vitamins and minerals that may be inconsistent in a produce-only diet. The pellet portion should constitute roughly 20 to 30 percent of the total daily intake by weight, with the remainder composed of fresh fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens.

Fruits such as banana, papaya, mango, apple, and melon are readily accepted and provide energy and hydration. However, fruit should not dominate the diet because its high sugar content can contribute to obesity and dental problems if consumed in excess. Vegetables and leafy greens including romaine lettuce, kale, collard greens, carrot, sweet potato, and squash provide fiber, vitamins, and minerals with lower caloric density. Root vegetables and tubers are particularly appropriate, as they reflect the paca's natural foraging preferences in the wild, where these animals dig for underground plant storage organs as a significant part of their diet.

Calcium and phosphorus balance is critical during the growth phase. The juvenile's skeletal system is developing rapidly, and inadequate calcium intake can lead to metabolic bone disease, a condition that causes softening and deformity of the bones and is difficult to reverse once established. A calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately 1.5 to 1 is ideal. Foods high in oxalates, such as spinach and chard, should be offered sparingly because oxalates bind calcium and reduce its bioavailability. Muscular development parallels skeletal growth, and the juvenile paca becomes increasingly powerful. The hind limbs, which are proportionally longer and more muscular than the forelimbs, develop the strength needed for the explosive leaping and sprinting that characterizes the species' predator-evasion strategy. Keepers handling juvenile pacas should be prepared for the increasing force behind kicks and struggles, and handling techniques should evolve accordingly. Supporting the animal's full body weight rather than gripping by the scruff or limbs reduces the risk of injury to both the animal and the handler.

Sexual maturity is reached between eight and twelve months, though the exact timing varies by individual and is influenced by nutrition, housing conditions, and overall health. In females, the first estrus may be subtle and easily missed by keepers unfamiliar with the signs. Males may begin scent-marking more frequently and displaying increased restlessness. The onset of sexual maturity does not mean the animal has completed its physical growth; pacas continue to add mass and refine body composition well into their second year. Breeding a female before she has reached full physical maturity is inadvisable, as the demands of pregnancy and lactation on an incompletely developed body increase the risk of complications.

Enclosure Design for Growing Pacas

The enclosure that served a neonatal pup and its mother will quickly become inadequate for a growing juvenile. Pacas are large, active rodents that require substantial space to maintain physical and psychological health. By three to four months of age, the juvenile should be transitioned into an enclosure that approaches adult dimensions. A minimum floor area of 8 feet by 6 feet is recommended for a single juvenile, with larger spaces preferred wherever possible. Height should be at least 4 feet, with secure walls or fencing that the animal cannot climb over or dig under, as pacas are capable of both.

Substrate choice becomes more important as the juvenile spends increasing amounts of time interacting with its environment. A deep layer of soil, coconut coir, or a soil-and-sand mixture allows the juvenile to engage in digging behavior, which is a fundamental part of the paca's behavioral repertoire. Hides and shelters are essential components of the juvenile enclosure. Pacas are prey animals with strong instincts to seek cover when startled, and an enclosure without adequate hiding spots produces a chronically stressed animal. At least two enclosed hides should be available, positioned at different locations within the enclosure so the animal has options. Wooden boxes, sections of large-diameter PVC pipe, or commercially available large rodent shelters all function well. The interior dimensions should be large enough for the animal to turn around comfortably, and at least one hide should have a solid floor and roof to provide the darkness and enclosure that mimics a natural burrow.

Water access should be expanded during the juvenile period. While the neonatal enclosure appropriately limited water depth for safety, a juvenile paca older than eight to ten weeks is a competent swimmer and benefits from access to a shallow pool or large water pan. Swimming and wading provide exercise, enrichment, and thermoregulation. The water feature should be easy to drain, clean, and refill, as pacas will defecate in water and the basin requires daily maintenance. Outdoor enclosures in appropriate climates can include more naturalistic water features, but indoor setups typically rely on heavy-duty plastic tubs or livestock watering pans set at ground level with a ramp or sloped entry for easy access.

Behavioral Development and Socialization Continuity

The juvenile period is marked by dramatic behavioral changes as the paca transitions from a dependent pup to an increasingly autonomous individual. The shift in activity patterns becomes more pronounced, with the juvenile settling firmly into a nocturnal schedule by around three months of age. Daytime activity diminishes, and the animal becomes most alert and active in the hours after sunset. Keepers who interact with their paca primarily during the day may notice the animal becoming less responsive and more inclined to retreat to its hide. Adjusting husbandry routines to accommodate the animal's natural activity cycle, such as offering the main meal in the evening and scheduling handling sessions during the early twilight hours, yields better cooperation and reduces stress.

Territorial behavior emerges during adolescence and intensifies as the animal approaches sexual maturity. The juvenile paca begins scent-marking its enclosure using anal gland secretions, urine, and chin rubbing. These marking behaviors are normal and should not be discouraged, as they provide an important psychological outlet for an animal that is instinctively driven to establish and maintain a territory. However, the intensity of marking, particularly urine-based marking, can create husbandry challenges, and keepers should plan substrate changes and enclosure cleaning around this increased output.

Aggression can surface during the juvenile period, particularly in animals that were under-socialized during their first weeks or that are housed in inadequate enclosures. A juvenile paca that feels cornered, startled, or insecure may stomp its hind feet, raise its dorsal hair, and produce grinding vocalizations as warnings before escalating to biting. Paca bites are serious injuries; the animal's powerful jaws and large incisors can cause deep lacerations and crush injuries. Learning to read and respect the warning signs is essential for safe handling. Approaching the animal calmly, allowing it to see and sniff the keeper's hands before being touched, and never cornering the animal against a wall are fundamental handling principles.

Continued socialization during the juvenile phase builds on the foundation established in the neonatal period but takes a different form. The focus shifts from simple handling tolerance to cooperative husbandry behaviors. Teaching the juvenile paca to enter a transport carrier voluntarily, to accept gentle examination of feet, teeth, and ears, and to remain calm during weighing sessions pays enormous dividends throughout the animal's long lifespan. Positive reinforcement using small pieces of preferred fruit as rewards is far more effective than force or restraint. A juvenile paca that learns to associate the keeper's approach with food rewards and calm interactions rather than capture and restraint develops into a manageable, lower-stress adult.
