The adult paca is an impressive animal by any rodent standard. Fully grown individuals typically measure 24 to 30 inches in body length and weigh between 13 and 31 pounds, with males averaging slightly larger than females. The body is robust and barrel-shaped, with short, sturdy legs and a vestigial tail that is barely visible beneath the fur. The coat is a glossy reddish-brown to dark brown, marked with four to five longitudinal rows of white or cream spots running along each flank. These spots provide disruptive camouflage in the dappled light of the forest floor and are a distinguishing feature of the species. The ventral surface is lighter, ranging from cream to pale gray.
The skull of the adult paca is distinctive among rodents, featuring greatly enlarged zygomatic arches that give the face a broad, heavy-cheeked appearance. These bony extensions are not merely structural; they serve as resonating chambers that amplify the grinding and clicking vocalizations the paca uses for communication and threat display. The incisors are large, orange-pigmented on the anterior surface due to iron deposition in the enamel, and grow continuously throughout life, requiring a diet that provides adequate abrasive wear. The cheek teeth are hypsodont, meaning they have high crowns designed for grinding tough plant material, reflecting the species' herbivorous specialization.
Adult pacas carry a substantial layer of subcutaneous fat, particularly across the dorsal and lateral body surfaces. This fat reserve serves as energy storage for periods of food scarcity in the wild and contributes to the animal's rounded body profile. In captivity, where food is consistently available, this natural propensity for fat storage can become problematic if dietary management is lax. An overweight paca develops the same metabolic and orthopedic complications seen in other obese captive animals, including hepatic lipidosis, joint stress, and reduced cardiovascular function. Regular weight monitoring and caloric discipline are essential components of adult paca husbandry.
The feet are adapted for both terrestrial and semi-aquatic locomotion. The forefeet have four toes with strong, slightly curved claws suited for digging, while the hind feet have five toes with partial webbing between them that aids in swimming. Adult pacas are strong, confident swimmers and will readily enter water to forage, escape perceived threats, or simply cool off. The skin is thick and tough, providing some protection against bites and scratches from conspecifics or predators, and the ears are small and rounded, positioned high on the skull to remain above the waterline during swimming.
