The Belgian Malinois undergoes dramatic physical transformation between three and eighteen months of age. During this juvenile period, puppies transition from clumsy, round-bodied youngsters into lean, athletic adolescents that begin to resemble the adults they will become. Growth is not always linear or symmetrical; it is common for a Malinois to appear gangly and disproportionate at certain stages, with legs seemingly too long for the body or ears that look oversized relative to the head. These temporary imbalances are entirely normal and resolve as the dog matures.
Males typically reach their full height between twelve and fourteen months, though they continue filling out with muscle mass well into their second year. Females generally mature slightly faster, approaching their adult frame by twelve months. Growth plates in the long bones remain open during much of this period, which has important implications for exercise intensity. Activities involving repetitive high-impact jumping, sharp turns on hard surfaces, or excessive distance running should be moderated until growth plates close, which a veterinarian can confirm through radiographs if there is any question.
Weight monitoring during the juvenile stage helps ensure the Malinois is growing at an appropriate rate without becoming overweight. Excess weight during skeletal development places unnecessary stress on joints and can contribute to orthopedic problems later. A healthy juvenile Malinois should have a visible waist when viewed from above and a slight abdominal tuck when viewed from the side. Dental development is another notable milestone during this stage. Puppies begin losing deciduous teeth around four months of age, with adult teeth fully erupted by six to seven months. Retained baby teeth, where adult and deciduous teeth occupy the same space, should be evaluated by a veterinarian, as they can cause alignment issues and trap debris that leads to early dental disease.
