Because the breed has Persian, British Shorthair, and Exotic Shorthair in its background, screening for polycystic kidney disease through ultrasound or genetic testing is essential. Cardiac screening through echocardiography helps identify hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and blood typing determines the cat's blood group, which is critical for avoiding neonatal isoerythrolysis, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when a Type B queen is bred with a Type A male.
Genetic testing for the curly coat gene provides valuable information for planning litters. The Selkirk Rex curly coat is governed by an autosomal dominant gene, meaning only one copy is needed to produce curls. Cats can be homozygous, carrying two copies of the curl gene, or heterozygous, carrying one copy. Homozygous cats produce all curly-coated offspring regardless of the mate's genotype, while heterozygous cats bred to straight-coated cats produce approximately fifty percent curly kittens. Understanding the genotype of both parents allows breeders to predict litter outcomes.

The breed is valued for its patient, tolerant, and affectionate nature, and responsible breeding programs prioritize these personality traits alongside physical conformation and coat quality. Cats that display extreme fearfulness, aggression, or anxiety are not suitable breeding candidates regardless of their physical attributes, as temperament has a heritable component that influences the quality of kittens produced.
