Responsible Himalayan breeding begins long before a mating is arranged, with a comprehensive health screening program that protects both the breeding animals and their future offspring. The breed's genetic background, rooted in the Persian lineage, carries several heritable conditions that must be tested for and documented before any cat is considered for a breeding program. Skipping or shortcutting this process perpetuates genetic disease in the population and produces kittens with preventable health problems.
Polycystic kidney disease screening is the single most critical test for any Himalayan intended for breeding. PKD is caused by an autosomal dominant mutation, meaning a single copy of the defective gene is sufficient to produce the disease. DNA testing definitively identifies carriers, and no cat that tests positive for the PKD1 mutation should be bred under any circumstances. Ultrasound screening is a complementary tool that can detect cysts in cats as young as six to twelve months, though its sensitivity increases with age. Both testing methods are readily available and affordable, and their consistent use has significantly reduced the prevalence of PKD in well-managed breeding programs.
Cardiac screening via echocardiography should be performed to evaluate for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which has been documented in the Persian and Himalayan lines. While no single genetic test covers all forms of HCM in cats, an echocardiogram performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist can identify structural abnormalities and wall thickening before a cat enters a breeding program. Cats with diagnosed HCM or those that are closely related to affected individuals should be removed from breeding consideration.
Additional pre-breeding assessments should include testing for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, a complete blood panel and urinalysis to confirm overall health, a fecal examination for intestinal parasites, and verification that all vaccinations are current. The queen should be in optimal body condition — neither overweight nor underweight — with a healthy, well-maintained coat, clear eyes, and no signs of respiratory compromise. A veterinary reproductive assessment that confirms normal reproductive anatomy and a regular estrous cycle rounds out the pre-breeding workup.
