Mynah birds typically reach sexual maturity between one and two years of age, but responsible breeders generally wait until birds are at least two years old before allowing them to breed, ensuring full physical maturity and emotional stability.

Determining the sex of mynah birds can be challenging, as most mynah species are monomorphic—meaning males and females look virtually identical externally. DNA sexing through a blood sample or feather sample is the most reliable method of confirming sex. Behavioral cues can sometimes suggest sex, as males tend to be slightly more vocal and may perform courtship displays, but these observations are not definitive and should not be relied upon as the sole method of sex determination.

Both prospective parents should undergo a comprehensive veterinary examination before breeding is attempted. Blood work, including iron levels and liver function tests, should be current and within normal ranges. Any bird showing signs of illness, nutritional deficiency, or iron storage disease should not be bred. In captivity, a nest box that mimics this natural cavity is essential. The nest box should be approximately 12 inches long by 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep, with a circular entrance hole of about three inches in diameter positioned near the top of one side.

The nest box should be mounted high in the breeding enclosure, as mynah birds instinctively prefer elevated nesting sites. During the approximately two-week incubation, the female maintains the eggs at a consistent temperature, turning them periodically to ensure even development. The male's role during this period varies—some males actively participate in incubation duties, taking turns on the nest to allow the female to eat and bathe, while others primarily serve as sentinels, alerting the female to perceived threats.

Candling the eggs—holding them up to a bright light source to check for embryonic development—can be performed around day seven to ten of incubation, but should be done with extreme care and minimal handling time. Fertile eggs will show visible blood vessels and a dark embryonic mass when candled. Infertile eggs will appear clear, and eggs in which the embryo has died will show a dark, irregular mass without the organized vascular network of a developing chick. Remove confirmed infertile eggs after the initial candling to allow the female to concentrate her incubation efforts on viable eggs.

As hatching approaches, you may hear faint peeping sounds coming from inside the eggs as the fully developed chicks begin to vocalize and pip—creating the first small crack in the shell. The pipping process can take 24 to 48 hours from the first visible crack to complete emergence. It is critical to resist the temptation to help a chick out of its shell. The physical effort of hatching is an important part of the chick's development, stimulating circulation and lung function. Intervening prematurely can cause bleeding from incompletely absorbed blood vessels and can be fatal.

Once the chicks hatch, the parents will typically begin feeding them within a few hours. Monitor from a distance to confirm that both parents are attentive and that the chicks are being fed. If a chick appears to be ignored or is pushed out of the nest by the parents, it may need to be removed for hand-rearing. Chick Development & Parental Care

Mynah chicks develop rapidly under parental care. Newborn chicks are altricial—blind, nearly featherless, and completely dependent on their parents for warmth and food. Both parents typically participate in feeding the chicks, regurgitating partially digested food directly into the gaping mouths of the nestlings. The chicks grow at an astonishing rate, and visible changes occur almost daily during the first two weeks of life.

During the chick-rearing period, the parents' nutritional needs increase substantially. Provide an abundance of high-quality food, with particular emphasis on protein-rich items such as live insects, cooked egg, and softened pellets. The parents will select appropriate food items and process them for their chicks. Nest box hygiene requires some attention during the chick-rearing period, but interventions should be minimal and quick to avoid disturbing the parents. Chick droppings accumulate in the nest box, and while parent birds often remove fecal sacs during the first week, the nest can become soiled as the chicks grow larger and produce more waste. A brief, careful cleaning every few days—replacing soiled nesting material with fresh—helps maintain sanitary conditions without causing undue stress to the family.

The chicks will begin to feather out between one and two weeks of age, and their eyes open during this same period. By three weeks, the chicks are becoming active and curious, stretching their wings and beginning to vocalize. Fledging—the first departure from the nest box—typically occurs between three and four weeks of age. The fledging period is a vulnerable time, as the young birds are clumsy and may fall or become stranded in locations they cannot navigate out of. Ensure the breeding enclosure is free of hazards and that fledglings have accessible perches and surfaces where they can land safely.

Weaning & Independence

After fledging, young mynah birds continue to depend on their parents for food and guidance for several additional weeks. The weaning process in parent-raised chicks occurs naturally as the parents gradually reduce the frequency of feedings and encourage the fledglings to find and consume food independently. This transition typically takes place between five and eight weeks of age, though the timeline can vary depending on the individual chicks and the parents' behavior.

During the weaning period, ensure that soft, easily consumed foods are available at the chicks' level within the enclosure. Small pieces of ripe fruit, moistened pellets, and soft insects placed in shallow dishes on the cage floor allow the fledglings to practice self-feeding. The young birds will initially be clumsy and inefficient eaters, often picking up food items and dropping them repeatedly before successfully consuming them. This is a normal learning process that should not cause concern.

Parent birds may begin to show signs of reduced tolerance toward their offspring as the weaning period progresses. The adults may gently rebuff begging fledglings, turning away from food solicitation or moving to a different perch. This parental behavior, while seemingly harsh, is a natural and important signal that encourages the young birds to develop independence. If the parents become overtly aggressive toward the fledglings—actively chasing, attacking, or preventing them from accessing food—the young birds should be separated into their own enclosure.

Once the young mynah birds are eating independently, maintaining a stable weight without supplemental parental feeding, and demonstrating confident perching and flight, they are fully weaned and can be housed separately from the parents. This is also the appropriate time to begin the socialization and taming process if the young birds are destined to be companion animals. The transition from the breeding enclosure to independent housing should be gradual, allowing the young birds to adjust to their new environment, new food presentation, and the absence of their parents and siblings.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding mynah birds carries significant ethical responsibilities that every prospective breeder must consider carefully before producing offspring. The decision to breed should never be taken lightly or driven solely by curiosity, the desire for profit, or the assumption that breeding is a natural and therefore inherently positive activity for captive birds. Responsible breeding requires a commitment to the lifelong welfare of every chick produced, as well as an honest assessment of one's ability to provide the time, resources, and expertise that breeding demands.

Before breeding, have a clear plan for the placement of all offspring. Mynah birds are long-lived companions that can survive 15 to 25 years in captivity, and finding responsible, informed homes for them is not always easy. Mynah birds have specialized dietary needs, particularly the management of iron intake, that many casual bird owners are not prepared to meet. Producing chicks without confirmed homes increases the risk that birds will end up in inadequate situations, surrendered to rescues, or neglected by owners who were not prepared for the commitment.

Genetic responsibility is another important consideration. Breeding closely related birds increases the risk of genetic defects and reduced vitality in offspring. If possible, obtain breeding stock from unrelated lines and maintain records of the parentage of all birds produced. Avoid breeding birds with known health issues, chronic conditions, or histories of iron storage disease, as these traits may have genetic components that could be passed to offspring.

The welfare of the breeding pair themselves must be carefully managed. Females should not be allowed to produce more than two clutches per year, as repeated egg laying depletes calcium reserves, stresses the reproductive system, and increases the risk of egg binding—a potentially life-threatening condition in which an egg becomes stuck in the reproductive tract. Remove the nest box between breeding cycles to discourage continuous laying. Both parents should be given adequate rest periods between breeding attempts, with their diet and health carefully monitored. Breeding is a privilege that comes with the obligation to prioritize the well-being of the birds over the production of offspring.
