Healthy chicks should show consistent weight gain through the first several weeks, with a plateau and slight decrease in weight as they approach fledging age and begin to slim down for flight.

The nest box should be inspected regularly for hygiene. Accumulated droppings, soiled bedding, and uneaten food debris create an environment conducive to bacterial and fungal growth. Replace the bedding material as needed, being mindful to minimize disruption to the nesting birds. A clean nest environment significantly reduces the risk of infection in vulnerable young chicks.

Postpartum & Recovery

After the breeding cycle is complete, whether chicks have been raised to weaning or pulled for hand-rearing, the breeding pair needs a recovery period before being allowed to breed again. Continuous breeding without adequate rest depletes the hen's calcium and nutritional reserves, weakens her immune system, and increases the risk of complications such as egg binding in future clutches. Remove the nest box after the breeding cycle to signal the end of the breeding season and to discourage the hen from laying another clutch immediately.
