Scarlet Macaws reach sexual maturity between three and five years of age, but physical maturity alone does not indicate readiness for breeding. Successful reproduction requires a pair that is physically healthy, behaviorally bonded, and housed in an environment that meets the demanding spatial and environmental requirements of breeding large macaws. Both the male and female should be in excellent body condition, free of infectious disease, and confirmed as genetically unrelated through DNA records or pedigree documentation.

A pre-breeding veterinary examination for both birds is essential. This evaluation should include a complete physical exam, blood work to assess organ function and nutritional status, testing for common avian diseases including polyomavirus, psittacine beak and feather disease, proventricular dilatation disease, and chlamydiosis, and a fecal examination. Hormonal changes manifest through increased vocalization, heightened territoriality around the nest box area, courtship displays including wing spreading and head bobbing, mutual feeding between the bonded pair, and copulation. The female may spend increasing amounts of time inspecting and modifying the interior of the nest box in the weeks leading up to egg laying. The male typically stands guard near the nest entrance and may become aggressively protective of the nesting area.

The female Scarlet Macaw typically lays a clutch of one to three eggs, with two being the most common. Hatching & Early Chick Care

As the incubation period nears its end, you may hear the chick vocalizing faintly from within the egg and notice a small pip mark where the chick has begun breaking through the shell with its egg tooth. The hatching process can take 24 to 48 hours from the first pip to full emergence, and it is essential to resist the temptation to assist unless the chick is clearly in distress and your avian veterinarian advises intervention. Premature assistance can cause bleeding from incompletely absorbed blood vessels and other life-threatening injuries.

If the parents are attentive and experienced, the healthiest approach is to allow them to rear the chick for at least the first two to three weeks before transitioning to hand-rearing. Parent-reared chicks receive natural crop flora, antibodies, and socialization cues from the adult birds that are difficult to replicate artificially. Co-parenting, where the breeder supplements parental care with periodic hand-feedings before eventually taking over fully, produces chicks that are both well-socialized to humans and benefit from parental nurturing.

Most responsible breeders limit production to one clutch per year at most, with some allowing a full year of rest between breeding cycles.

The female in particular requires nutritional replenishment after breeding. Egg production and the subsequent feeding of chicks draw heavily on calcium, protein, and fat reserves. Continue offering an enriched diet with emphasis on calcium-rich vegetables, high-quality pellets, and moderate healthy fats for several weeks after the chicks are weaned or removed for hand-rearing. Assess the pair's behavioral dynamics after breeding, as the intensity of the breeding cycle can sometimes alter the social relationship between the birds or between the birds and their human caretakers. Breeding macaws often become highly territorial and may remain more aggressive than usual for some time after chicks fledge.
