Annual veterinary visits should include a thorough physical examination, blood work including a complete blood count and chemistry panel, and a Gram stain of the choana and cloaca. These baseline tests allow your veterinarian to detect subtle changes in organ function, blood cell counts, and microbial flora long before clinical symptoms become apparent. Many serious avian diseases, including liver disease, kidney problems, and infections, develop silently for months or years before the bird shows outward signs of illness.
Between veterinary visits, daily observation is your most valuable diagnostic tool. Become intimately familiar with your macaw's normal behavior, droppings, appetite, posture, vocalization patterns, and activity level. Parrots are prey animals that instinctively hide illness to avoid appearing vulnerable, so subtle changes in routine often represent the earliest detectable signs that something is wrong. A bird that is slightly less active than usual, eats a bit less enthusiastically, or sits with feathers slightly fluffed warrants closer monitoring and possibly an unscheduled veterinary visit.
Maintain a clean living environment by washing food and water dishes daily, cleaning cage surfaces and perches regularly, and ensuring adequate ventilation in the room where the bird lives. Airborne toxins including fumes from overheated nonstick cookware, scented candles, aerosol sprays, and tobacco smoke are particularly dangerous to birds because of their highly efficient respiratory systems.
