Proventricular Dilatation Disease, commonly known as PDD, is a serious and often fatal viral disease affecting parrots, including African Grey Parrots, that targets the gastrointestinal tract and nervous system. Originally called macaw wasting disease due to its discovery in macaws in the 1970s, PDD has since been recognized in over 80 species of psittacines worldwide and represents one of the most significant infectious disease threats to companion and aviary birds. The disease is caused by avian bornavirus, which triggers an inflammatory response that damages the nerves controlling the gastrointestinal system, leading to impaired digestion, malnutrition, and progressive wasting. African Grey Parrots are among the species most commonly affected by PDD, and the disease can manifest with primarily gastrointestinal signs, primarily neurological signs, or a combination of both.
The causative agent of PDD is avian bornavirus, a member of the Bornaviridae family that was definitively identified as the cause of the disease in 2008 after decades of investigation. Multiple strains of avian bornavirus exist, with some appearing more pathogenic than others. The virus infects nerve cells and triggers an immune-mediated inflammatory response that damages neural tissue, particularly affecting the nerves of the gastrointestinal tract. This damage disrupts the normal coordinated movements of the digestive system, preventing proper grinding and digestion of food in the ventriculus and leading to the characteristic proventricular dilatation seen on imaging or necropsy. Transmission is believed to occur through fecal-oral contact, exposure to contaminated feather dust, and possibly vertical transmission from infected parents.
The impact of PDD on affected African Grey Parrots can be devastating, with the disease often progressing to debilitation and death if unmanaged. The gastrointestinal form of the disease causes progressive weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite, as food passes through the digestive system undigested. Affected birds may become severely emaciated while continuing to eat, giving rise to the term wasting disease. Neurological involvement can cause a wide range of signs including ataxia, weakness, seizures, and blindness. The combination of malnutrition and neurological dysfunction leads to declining quality of life. Without treatment, most birds with clinical PDD eventually die from the disease or its complications, though the timeline varies from weeks to years depending on the individual case.
While there is no cure for PDD, advances in understanding the disease have led to treatment approaches that can extend life and improve quality of life for affected birds. Anti-inflammatory medications, particularly non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can reduce the immune-mediated inflammation that causes nerve damage and allow some degree of recovery. Dietary modification to highly digestible, easily processed foods reduces the burden on the damaged digestive system. Supportive care addressing nutritional deficits, secondary infections, and symptoms is essential. With aggressive treatment, some birds have lived for years after diagnosis with acceptable quality of life. Early detection and intervention improve outcomes, making awareness of PDD signs crucial for African Grey owners.
