Bone density and muscular development accelerate as the young macaw becomes increasingly active. Flight muscles strengthen rapidly once the bird begins sustained flying, and the beak continues to harden and grow into its full adult dimensions. The upper mandible develops its characteristic hooked shape more fully during this stage, giving the bird the powerful crushing ability it will rely on for the rest of its life.
Juvenile Scarlet Macaws can be distinguished from adults by subtle differences in eye color. Young birds typically have dark brown or gray irises that gradually lighten to the pale yellow characteristic of mature adults. Regular weight monitoring remains important during the juvenile phase, though daily weighing can shift to weekly once the bird is fully weaned and established on a solid diet.
