Pairing and Sexual Maturity

Greater Hill Mynahs are monomorphic, meaning males and females are visually indistinguishable. Claims that cocks have larger wattles or heavier bills do not hold up reliably across individuals or subspecies, and pairing on appearance alone is the most common reason a supposed pair produces years of infertile eggs or no eggs at all. DNA sexing from a blood or feather sample is inexpensive, definitive, and should be considered a prerequisite rather than an option.

Birds typically reach sexual maturity between about one and two years of age, though many pairs do not settle into productive breeding until their second or third year. There is no advantage in rushing a young hen into production, and a bird still completing its own growth and first full molts is poorly placed to support a clutch.

Compatibility is the second requirement and cannot be assumed from correct sexing. Hill mynahs form strong pair bonds and reject partners they have not chosen, sometimes violently. Introduce prospective pairs in a large neutral flight neither bird considers its own, with multiple perches, visual barriers, and duplicated food and water stations so a subordinate bird can eat without approaching the other. Supervise closely for the first days and be prepared to separate.

A bonded pair announces itself through behavior. The birds perch in contact or close proximity, allopreen around the head and nape, duet or answer one another's calls, and move around the enclosure together. The male may follow the female closely, present food, and display near the nest site. Aggressive chasing, one bird excluded from food, or feather damage inflicted by the other means the pairing has failed and should be ended before injury occurs; pairs that are merely tolerating each other rarely go on to rear young successfully.

Nest Boxes and Breeding Enclosure Setup

In the wild, hill mynahs are secondary cavity nesters, occupying holes in tall forest trees, frequently well above the ground and often in loose association with other pairs. Captive breeding setups that reproduce the essentials of that arrangement, height, enclosure, and privacy, succeed far more often than those that do not.

A suitable nest box is roughly ten to twelve inches square internally with a depth of around fourteen to sixteen inches, built from untreated natural timber of a substantial thickness, with an entrance hole of about three to four inches. Mount it high in the enclosure, in the most sheltered and least trafficked corner, angled slightly forward so rain cannot enter and moisture cannot pool. A shallow base layer of coarse wood shavings, dry leaf litter, or wood chips gives the birds something to work with; they will add their own material of twigs, leaves, and feathers.

The flight itself should be generously proportioned, since a pair confined too closely will redirect breeding aggression onto each other. An enclosure of at least eight to twelve feet in length gives room for flight, escape, and separation, with solid or screened sides that block visual contact with neighboring pairs. House one pair per enclosure; colony breeding of hill mynahs in shared flights generally leads to nest interference and fighting.

Offer two nest boxes if space allows and let the pair choose, then leave the arrangement untouched. Hill mynahs are sensitive to disturbance during the selection and laying period, and a box that is inspected daily, moved, or cleaned mid-cycle may be abandoned. Site the flight so that routine human traffic passes at a distance rather than directly beneath the box, and establish the setup well before the breeding season so the pair has time to accept it.

Conditioning the Breeding Pair

Conditioning begins weeks before any eggs are expected. Both birds should be at good body weight, in full clean plumage with the molt completed, free of parasites, and screened by an avian veterinarian. Breeding an underweight, overweight, or subclinically ill bird risks the hen's life and produces poor hatchability, and problems that were manageable in a non-breeding bird become dangerous under the metabolic load of egg production.

Protein drives reproductive condition in this species. Increase the insect component substantially in the weeks before and throughout breeding: gut-loaded crickets, small roaches, waxworms, and soft-bodied larvae given daily rather than a few times a week. Wild parents feed nestlings almost entirely on insects in the early days, and a pair that has not been conditioned to take live food readily will struggle to rear a clutch.

Calcium supply for the laying hen requires care in a bird that cannot tolerate iron supplementation. Use a plain calcium carbonate supplement or a veterinary calcium product with a verified low iron content, and confirm that any general vitamin and mineral preparation is iron free before it goes anywhere near a mynah. The rule that governs this species at every other stage governs it here too: no iron-fortified feeds, no organ or muscle meat, no iron-bearing water, and no high-ascorbate fruit alongside the protein ration.

Environmental cues complete the picture. Breeding activity in hill mynahs is stimulated by warmth, increasing daylength, and rising humidity, corresponding to the seasonal pattern of their native monsoon forests. Lengthening the photoperiod gradually, raising ambient humidity, and offering regular access to bathing and light overhead misting will often bring a settled pair into condition. Reducing those cues afterward is the usual method of bringing a pair out of breeding condition when a rest is needed.

Eggs, Incubation, and Clutch Management

A typical Greater Hill Mynah clutch is two to three eggs, occasionally four, laid on consecutive or alternate days. The eggs are a distinctive pale blue to blue-green ground color marked with brown and purplish blotches, most heavily concentrated toward the broader end. Full incubation generally begins once the clutch is nearly complete, which produces a relatively synchronous hatch rather than the staggered brood seen in some species.

Incubation lasts approximately fourteen to fifteen days and is carried out principally by the hen, with the male attending, feeding her, and taking shorter shifts on the nest. This is a strikingly short incubation compared with the parrots most aviculturists are used to, and it means the interval between an egg being laid and a highly demanding nestling appearing is only two weeks. Preparation for rearing needs to be complete before the clutch is laid, not after.

Minimize inspection. Where candling is done, do it once at around day six to eight, quickly, while the hen is off the nest, and with clean warm hands. Persistent nest interference is a leading cause of abandonment and of eggs being damaged or ejected. Infertile eggs from a first-year pair are common and do not indicate a failed pairing; many pairs improve markedly on their second or third attempt.

Artificial incubation is a fallback rather than a default, used when a clutch is abandoned, a hen is unwell, or eggs are chilled. Target approximately ninety-nine point three degrees Fahrenheit in a forced-air incubator with relative humidity in the mid fifties to around sixty percent, adjusted to achieve appropriate weight loss across the incubation period, with automatic turning until the final two days. Success rates are lower than under a competent hen, and the resulting chick then requires the intensive crop-less hand-rearing regimen that this species demands from the moment it hatches.

Parent Rearing Versus Hand Rearing

The choice between leaving chicks with the parents and pulling them for hand rearing shapes both the birds produced and the workload undertaken, and it deserves a decision made in advance rather than in the middle of a hatch. Parent-reared mynahs generally grow more robustly, develop normal social behavior toward their own species, and are far less labor intensive, but they are typically less confident with people unless handled early.

Parent rearing works well when the pair is experienced and adequately provisioned. The adults will consume a remarkable quantity of live insects while feeding nestlings, and the single most common cause of failure is an insufficient or irregular live food supply, which leads to chicks being underfed or, in some cases, removed from the nest. Provide insects several times daily in quantity, maintain fruit and pellet, keep disturbance minimal, and weigh chicks only if the pair tolerates brief inspection.

Hand rearing for tameness is usually done by pulling chicks at around ten to fourteen days, once the parents have delivered the immunological and nutritional benefits of the earliest feeds but before the chicks have become strongly wary. Pulling earlier is possible but raises mortality considerably, because a hatchling with no crop needs feeding every thirty to forty-five minutes through the daylight hours and tolerates error poorly.

A middle path suits many breeders: leave the chicks with the parents and handle them briefly and gently each day from around two weeks of age, so they grow up with normal avian social learning and simultaneous familiarity with people. Whichever route is chosen, keep individual records for each chick from the day it hatches, band or otherwise identify them so weights are attributed correctly, and be prepared to intervene if any chick's weight stalls while its siblings continue to gain.

Breeding Season Health Risks

Egg binding, in which a hen is unable to pass a formed egg, is the acute emergency of the breeding season and is most often associated with calcium deficiency, obesity, poor muscle condition, first-time laying, or an oversized or malformed egg. A hen straining on the floor of the enclosure, fluffed, with a distended abdomen and laboured breathing, needs veterinary attention immediately rather than home remedies; the condition can kill within hours and is readily treatable when caught early.

Related reproductive problems include cloacal prolapse, chronic egg laying with progressive calcium depletion, yolk peritonitis following ovulation into the coelomic cavity, and salpingitis. Hens that lay clutch after clutch without rest are at particular risk, and pulling eggs repeatedly to force replacement laying is a practice that damages the bird. Reduce photoperiod, remove the nest box, and allow a genuine rest period between attempts.

Hemochromatosis intersects with breeding in an important way. Conditioning diets that raise protein and add supplements are exactly where iron creeps back into a mynah's ration, and a hen under reproductive load is not well placed to absorb that insult. Verify the iron content of every product used during conditioning, including supposedly inert soft food mixes, insect gut-loading diets, and mineral supplements.

Aggression is the remaining seasonal hazard. A cock in strong breeding condition may become intolerant of his mate outside the nest, of neighboring pairs visible through the wire, and of keepers entering the flight. Provide escape routes and visual barriers, feed at multiple stations, and be prepared to separate a pair that turns violent. Nest hygiene matters too: soiled or damp nest material harbors bacteria and mites, and a box that has held a clutch should be emptied, cleaned, and dried thoroughly between breeding attempts rather than reused as it stands.

Legal Status, Ethics, and Record Keeping

Greater Hill Mynahs are listed on Appendix II of CITES, reflecting sustained pressure on wild populations from trapping for the international cage bird trade. Wild numbers have declined markedly across much of the native range, driven by that trade together with the loss of the mature forest trees the species depends on for nesting cavities. Anyone breeding this species is operating within a conservation context, whether or not they intended to.

Legal obligations vary considerably by jurisdiction and change over time. In the United States, the Wild Bird Conservation Act sharply restricts importation of wild-caught birds, and captive breeding is the practical source of legally held birds. Import, export, sale, and in some places simple possession may require permits or documentation. Verify current requirements with your national wildlife authority and with state, provincial, or local regulators before acquiring breeding stock or offering young birds, and keep whatever documentation accompanies every bird.

Record keeping is both a legal safeguard and a genetic one. Maintain a written or database record for every bird: closed band or microchip number, hatch date, parentage, subspecies where known, DNA sex, source, all veterinary findings, and disposition. Track pairings and outcomes so that relatedness is known and inbreeding avoided, and be cautious about mixing birds of different subspecies, since indiscriminate crossing erodes the value of captive populations as a genetic reserve.

Finally, place young birds responsibly. A hill mynah is a twenty-year commitment to a loud, messy, frugivorous bird with a demanding low-iron diet and a genuine risk of fatal liver disease if fed carelessly. Screen buyers, explain the iron issue in writing, provide the diet the bird is already on, and be willing to take a bird back rather than see it passed along. Breeding this species well is not only a technical exercise but an obligation to the individual birds produced.
