Sebaceous adenitis is an inflammatory skin disease in dogs characterized by the progressive destruction of sebaceous glands, the small oil-producing glands associated with hair follicles. This condition results in loss of the natural oils that normally keep the skin and coat healthy, leading to characteristic scaling, hair loss, and coat changes. Sebaceous adenitis is considered immune-mediated, with the body's own immune system targeting and destroying the sebaceous glands. The condition has a strong genetic component and is particularly common in Standard Poodles, Akitas, and Samoyeds, though it can occur in any breed.
The sebaceous glands normally produce sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the skin and hair, provides waterproofing, and helps maintain the barrier function of the skin. When these glands are destroyed by the inflammatory process of sebaceous adenitis, the skin becomes dry and loses its natural protection. Hair follicles, which depend on sebum for healthy hair growth, become plugged with keratin debris. The lack of normal lubrication causes the coat to become dull, brittle, and prone to damage. Over time, progressive hair loss occurs as follicles become dysfunctional.
The clinical presentation of sebaceous adenitis varies between breeds and individual dogs. In Standard Poodles and other long-coated breeds, the disease typically causes symmetric hair loss with adherent scale that forms tightly along hair shafts, creating a distinctive appearance called follicular casting. Short-coated breeds like Vizslas may show more nodular, patchy alopecia with less prominent scaling. The Akita presents with a particularly severe form characterized by deep bacterial infections and marked hair loss. Secondary bacterial skin infections commonly complicate sebaceous adenitis regardless of breed, adding to the clinical signs and discomfort.
While sebaceous adenitis cannot be cured because destroyed sebaceous glands do not regenerate, the condition can usually be managed effectively with consistent treatment. Management focuses on replacing the missing skin oils through topical treatments, controlling secondary infections, and potentially using immunomodulatory medications to slow disease progression. Many dogs with sebaceous adenitis can maintain acceptable coat quality and good quality of life with ongoing care. The cosmetic impact may be significant, particularly in show dogs, but the condition is not life-threatening and most affected dogs live normal lifespans.
