Demodectic mange, commonly known as demodex, is a parasitic skin condition caused by microscopic mites of the Demodex genus that live within the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of dogs. The most common species affecting dogs is Demodex canis, though Demodex injai and Demodex cornei have also been identified in canine patients. This condition is one of the most frequently diagnosed parasitic skin diseases in veterinary dermatology, particularly affecting young dogs and those with compromised immune systems. Unlike other forms of mange, demodectic mange is not considered contagious between adult dogs under normal circumstances, making it a unique parasitic condition in veterinary medicine.
Demodex mites are actually normal inhabitants of canine skin, passed from mother to puppy during the first few days of nursing. In healthy dogs with properly functioning immune systems, these mites exist in small numbers without causing any clinical problems. However, when a dog's immune system is immature, weakened, or genetically predisposed to poor mite regulation, the mite population can multiply uncontrollably. The generalized form requires aggressive treatment and can indicate underlying immune system dysfunction.
Treatment for demodectic mange has evolved significantly over the years, with modern antiparasitic medications offering excellent success rates for most affected dogs. Early detection and proper veterinary care are essential for achieving the best outcomes, particularly in cases of generalized disease. While treatment can be lengthy, sometimes requiring several months of medication, the prognosis for most dogs with demodectic mange is good with appropriate therapy.
