Conditions producing similar symptoms to pyoderma require differentiation for appropriate treatment. Demodicosis can cause similar-appearing skin lesions before secondary bacterial infection develops. Dermatophytosis (ringworm) produces circular areas of hair loss and scaling that may resemble pyoderma. Pemphigus foliaceus and other autoimmune skin diseases cause pustules and crusts mimicking bacterial infection. Cutaneous lymphoma and other skin neoplasms may initially be confused with infectious conditions. Drug reactions occasionally produce pustular eruptions. Cytology, culture, skin biopsy, and other diagnostic testing differentiate these conditions from primary pyoderma.

Potential complications of pyoderma range from local extension to systemic involvement. Chronic or poorly treated superficial pyoderma may progress to deep infection with furunculosis and cellulitis. Scarring, permanent hair loss, and pigmentation changes result from deep infections and repeated episodes. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is common after superficial pyoderma resolution. Antibiotic resistance development, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, complicates future treatment. Rarely, deep pyoderma can result in bacteremia and systemic infection. Chronic pyoderma significantly impacts quality of life for affected dogs and their owners. Prevention of complications relies on appropriate treatment duration, identification and management of underlying causes, and judicious antibiotic use.
