Pyoderma is the term used to describe bacterial infection of the skin in dogs, representing one of the most common dermatological conditions encountered in veterinary practice. The name derives from Greek roots meaning pus-producing skin condition, accurately describing the characteristic purulent discharge associated with these infections. Pyoderma encompasses a spectrum of bacterial skin infections classified by depth of tissue involvement, ranging from surface infections affecting only the outermost skin layer to deep infections penetrating into subcutaneous tissues. Understanding the type and depth of pyoderma is essential for determining appropriate treatment and identifying underlying causes that predispose affected dogs to infection.
The pathophysiology of pyoderma involves bacterial colonization and infection of skin structures that would normally resist microbial invasion. Healthy canine skin maintains multiple defense mechanisms including physical barrier function, antimicrobial peptides, normal bacterial flora competition, and local immune responses that together prevent pathogenic bacteria from establishing infection. Pyoderma develops when these defenses are compromised by underlying conditions including allergies, parasites, hormonal disorders, immune dysfunction, or physical factors like skin fold moisture. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is the most common bacterial pathogen isolated from canine pyoderma cases, though other bacteria may be involved, particularly in deep or chronic infections.
Clinical classification of pyoderma recognizes three main categories based on depth of infection. Surface pyoderma affects only the superficial epidermis without involving hair follicles, manifesting as conditions like acute moist dermatitis (hot spots) and skin fold dermatitis. Superficial pyoderma involves the hair follicles and surrounding epidermis, causing bacterial folliculitis with characteristic pustules and collarette lesions. Deep pyoderma extends beyond hair follicles into the dermis and sometimes subcutaneous tissues, producing furunculosis, cellulitis, and draining tracts. The depth of infection influences treatment approach, duration, prognosis, and urgency of identifying predisposing factors.
Proper management of pyoderma requires both eliminating the bacterial infection and addressing any underlying conditions that allowed infection to develop. Antibiotic therapy targets the causative bacteria, with treatment duration depending on infection depth and response. Concurrent topical therapy including medicated shampoos, sprays, or ointments enhances bacterial elimination and supports skin healing. Perhaps most importantly, identifying and managing predisposing factors is essential for preventing recurrence. Dogs with allergies, hormonal imbalances, or immune dysfunction often experience repeated pyoderma episodes unless underlying conditions are controlled. Working closely with a veterinarian or veterinary dermatologist ensures comprehensive management achieving both infection resolution and long-term control.
