Ringworm is not caused by a worm at all but rather by a group of keratinophilic fungi known as dermatophytes. These organisms thrive on keratin, the structural protein found in skin, hair, and nails. The name ringworm originates from the characteristic circular or ring-shaped lesions the infection often produces on the skin of affected humans and animals. In dogs, the three most common causative species are Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, with Microsporum canis being responsible for the vast majority of canine cases.
The dermatophyte fungi reproduce through the formation of spores called arthroconidia, which are remarkably resilient and can survive in the environment for months or even years under favorable conditions. These spores attach to keratin-rich surfaces and germinate when they find suitable conditions, particularly warm and humid environments. The fungus then invades the hair shaft and surrounding skin, feeding on the keratin as it grows outward in a centrifugal pattern, which creates the classic expanding ring-shaped lesion.
Ringworm is considered one of the most significant zoonotic skin diseases, meaning it readily transmits between animals and humans. This cross-species transmission potential makes it a public health concern, particularly in households with children, elderly individuals, or immunocompromised persons. The infection is self-limiting in healthy adult dogs with robust immune systems, often resolving within three to four months without treatment, but veterinary intervention is strongly recommended to reduce the duration of illness, minimize environmental contamination, and protect other animals and humans in the household.
The prevalence of ringworm varies geographically and is influenced by climate, with higher rates observed in warm, humid regions. Dogs living in crowded conditions such as shelters, breeding facilities, and boarding kennels face significantly elevated risk due to the close contact between animals and the difficulty of maintaining adequate environmental decontamination in these settings.
