Dermatophytosis, commonly known as ringworm, is a superficial fungal infection affecting the skin, hair, and occasionally nails of dogs. Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but rather by a group of fungi called dermatophytes that have the ability to invade and thrive in keratinized tissues. The most common dermatophyte species affecting dogs is Microsporum canis, followed by Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This condition is one of the most frequently diagnosed fungal infections in veterinary dermatology and carries significant zoonotic potential, meaning it can spread from dogs to humans and other animals.
Dermatophytes infect the superficial layers of the skin by producing enzymes called keratinases that break down keratin, the structural protein found in skin, hair, and nails. Once the fungus establishes itself, it spreads outward in a circular pattern as it consumes keratin, which explains the characteristic ring-shaped lesions that gave the condition its common name. The infection remains confined to the dead, keratinized outer layers of the skin and does not invade living tissue or spread internally. The body's inflammatory response to the fungal infection causes the visible clinical signs including hair loss, scaling, and crusting.
The impact of dermatophytosis on affected dogs varies considerably depending on the extent of infection, the dog's immune status, and the specific dermatophyte species involved. While the condition itself is generally not life-threatening, it can cause significant discomfort, cosmetic concerns, and stress for both dogs and their owners. The highly contagious nature of ringworm means that infection in one dog can quickly spread to other pets in the household as well as human family members, making prompt diagnosis and treatment important for household health. Some dogs may experience only mild, self-limiting infections, while others, particularly young puppies or immunocompromised individuals, may develop more extensive disease.
Dermatophytosis is treatable, and most dogs recover fully with appropriate antifungal therapy. Treatment typically involves a combination of topical and systemic antifungal medications, along with environmental decontamination to prevent reinfection and spread. The duration of treatment varies but typically extends several weeks beyond apparent clinical resolution to ensure complete elimination of the fungus.
