Some Red-Lored Amazons develop intense phobias of certain pets, while others may tease, provoke, or aggress toward dogs or cats, creating extremely dangerous situations for all animals involved.

Strict separation protocols must be maintained without exception when households include dogs or cats. The bird should be housed in a room where pets cannot access the cage at any time, even when owners are absent. Out-of-cage time should occur exclusively in separate, pet-free rooms with closed, secure doors. Never allow pets and birds to interact directly regardless of how well-behaved, gentle, or trustworthy the pets appear. Thousands of preventable tragedies occur annually when owners became complacent about safety protocols after extended periods of seeming peaceful coexistence. One moment of inattention or broken routine can result in death or serious injury.

Small mammals including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, rats, and mice must be kept completely separated from Red-Lored Amazons. These animals can frighten the bird with their movements, scents, and sounds, while the bird's loud vocalizations may cause extreme stress to prey animals. Additionally, zoonotic diseases can sometimes transmit between species through proximity, shared air space, or contact with contaminated surfaces.

Other birds may be compatible with Red-Lored Amazons depending strongly on individual personalities, proper introduction protocols, adequate space provision, and careful ongoing monitoring. However, Amazon parrots can display aggression, territoriality, and dominance toward other birds, particularly during hormonal breeding seasons. Housing multiple birds together requires very large cages or aviary spaces, extremely careful supervised introduction over extended periods, and willingness to permanently separate birds if aggression, bullying, or incompatibility develops. Some Red-Lored Amazons strongly prefer being only birds in households, bonding exclusively with human companions, while others accept, tolerate, or even enjoy avian companionship.
