Branches from bird-safe hardwood species such as manzanita, java wood, dragonwood, and ribbon wood provide the irregular diameter, textured bark, and slight flex that most closely replicate the branches a wild Red-Lored Amazon would grip. The diameter variation along a single branch forces the foot to adjust its grip constantly, exercising tendons and distributing pressure across different areas of the sole rather than concentrating it on one point. When purchasing natural branch perches, look for diameters ranging from approximately three-quarters of an inch to one and a half inches across the usable length.

Bathing frequency depends on the individual bird's preference, the household humidity level, and the season. In dry climates or during winter months when indoor heating reduces ambient humidity, daily misting or every-other-day bathing supports feather and skin health. However, their necessity is debatable. A Red-Lored Amazon that bathes regularly, eats a balanced diet, and lives in a properly humidified environment typically maintains excellent feather condition without topical products. Preening sprays are most useful for birds recovering from feather damage, transitioning from poor husbandry conditions, or living in environments with persistently low humidity where regular misting alone is insufficient.

Cage Covers and Sleep Accessories

A quality cage cover is a deceptively important accessory that directly affects a Red-Lored Amazon's sleep quality, hormonal regulation, and behavioral stability. Amazons need ten to twelve hours of uninterrupted darkness nightly, and in most households, ambient light from lamps, screens, street lights, and hallway fixtures intrudes on the bird's sleep space long after an appropriate bedtime. A properly fitted cage cover blocks light infiltration and also dampens sound, creating a calmer, more consistent sleep environment.

Cage covers should be made from tightly woven, opaque, breathable fabric. Quilted or lined covers provide additional light-blocking and sound-dampening properties compared to single-layer options. The cover must allow adequate air circulation, which means it should drape over the cage without being sealed tightly at the bottom.
