Growing birds may develop permanent skeletal deformities that impair function and quality of life. Breeding females are at risk for egg binding, a potentially fatal complication. Birds with advanced disease may be unable to perch, climb, or perform normal activities. Metabolic bone disease is highly treatable when identified early and addressed with appropriate nutritional intervention, and even better, it is largely preventable through proper husbandry. Treatment focuses on correcting nutritional deficiencies through diet improvement, calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation, and sometimes injectable calcium for acute hypocalcemia. Supportive care helps manage symptoms while the bird's body recovers. The prognosis is generally good when treatment begins before irreversible skeletal changes occur.
