It needs periodic topping up as it breaks down, which is a feature rather than a chore since it means the surface is never quite the same.

Substrate depth and variation give the animal something to work with underneath as well. Two to three inches of cypress mulch or coconut husk allows real burrowing behavior, and varying depth across the enclosure creates a gradient of digging opportunity. A patch of damp sphagnum in one corner, a stretch of flat stone in another, a section of bark chips somewhere else, and a shallow tray of moss all produce distinct textures and microclimates. Any pump, filter intake, or heater must be screened and guarded, and a basin with steep smooth sides and no exit ramp is a drowning risk for an animal that becomes exhausted or disoriented, despite this being a strong swimmer. Electrical equipment near standing water must run on ground-fault protected circuits, and cords should be secured so they cannot be pulled into the basin or wrapped by the snake. Deep water combined with heavy submerged decor that could trap a snake underneath is a combination worth designing out entirely.

Several whole product categories should simply be skipped. Mammal and bird toys, including balls, bells, mirrors, ropes, and chew items, offer nothing to a snake and introduce ingestion and entanglement risk. Painted or coated decorations may leach in constant moisture. Untreated wood or leaf litter gathered outdoors can introduce mites, parasites, and pesticide residue unless properly frozen or heat-treated first.
