Reliable access to clean, fresh water is a non-negotiable requirement for Multimammate Mouse colonies, and the choice of water delivery system has direct implications for hygiene, maintenance workload, and the health of every animal in the enclosure. Mastomys are active drinkers that consume a surprising volume of water relative to their body size, particularly in warm environments or during periods of high reproductive activity when nursing females may double or triple their fluid intake compared to non-breeding individuals.
Glass water bottles with stainless steel sipper tubes are the preferred delivery system for most small-mammal keepers, and they are well suited to Multimammate Mouse enclosures. Glass bottles are resistant to chewing, easy to inspect for water level and cleanliness, and do not leach chemicals the way certain plastics can when exposed to sunlight or cleaning agents over time. The sipper tube should feature a ball-bearing valve mechanism that dispenses water on demand without dripping, as a leaking bottle rapidly saturates the surrounding bedding and creates a bacterial breeding ground directly adjacent to the colony's primary water source.
Plastic water bottles are less expensive and lighter than glass, making them easier to handle during daily refills, but they have significant drawbacks for use with Mastomys. These mice are persistent chewers and will gnaw the spout, spring guard, and bottle body if any plastic component is accessible through the cage mesh. A compromised bottle can leak catastrophically, flooding the substrate and leaving the colony without water. Plastic bottles also scratch and cloud over time, making it difficult to visually assess water level and cleanliness without removing the bottle from the enclosure.
In colony settings with six or more animals, providing two water bottles at different locations within the enclosure ensures that all animals have access regardless of social hierarchy. Dominant Multimammate Mice will sometimes guard a resource as a display of territorial control, and a colony with a single water source is vulnerable to this behavior. Water should be changed daily, and the sipper tube assembly should be cleaned with a small bottle brush at least every other day to remove biofilm that accumulates inside the tube and around the ball bearing. Weekly sterilization of the entire bottle in a dilute vinegar solution or through boiling, for glass bottles only, keeps bacterial colonies from establishing.
