The Multimammate Mouse, Mastomys natalensis, is a true omnivore native to sub-Saharan Africa where it thrives on a remarkably varied diet that shifts with seasonal availability. Wild populations consume cereal grains, wild seeds, roots, green vegetation, insects, larvae, and occasionally small vertebrates or bird eggs. This dietary flexibility is one reason the species has colonized such a broad range of habitats, from savanna grasslands to agricultural margins and even human dwellings. Replicating this breadth in captivity is the single most important factor in maintaining a healthy, reproductively viable colony with good coat condition and robust immune function.
Protein requirements for Multimammate Mice sit in the range of sixteen to twenty-two percent of total diet by dry weight, somewhat higher than the needs of common fancy mice but lower than those of dedicated insectivores like hedgehogs or sugar gliders. Animal-based protein from insects or egg is important for amino acid completeness, but Mastomys are less dependent on insect protein than species that evolved as obligate insectivores. A mixed approach that combines a quality rodent pellet with regular insect supplementation provides the best amino acid coverage without overloading fat intake.
Fat content should be kept moderate, roughly four to seven percent of the dry diet. Multimammate Mice are prone to obesity in captivity because they are prolific hoarders and will cache food in nest material, consuming it throughout the night at a pace that exceeds their caloric expenditure when exercise opportunities are limited. Breeding females and growing juveniles tolerate slightly higher fat levels due to the metabolic demands of lactation and rapid growth, but even these animals should not be offered unlimited high-fat seeds or insect larvae.
Vitamin and mineral balance deserves particular attention in colony settings where multiple animals share a food supply. Dominant individuals may monopolize the most palatable items, leaving subordinate cage mates with a nutritionally incomplete diet. Keepers who feed scatter-style across multiple locations in the enclosure help mitigate this hierarchy-driven nutritional imbalance. Calcium supplementation is especially critical for breeding females, which can cycle through pregnancies in rapid succession and are vulnerable to hypocalcemia if dietary calcium is not consistently available.
