Enrichment is not an optional luxury for Mastomys; it is a fundamental component of responsible husbandry that directly affects physical health, psychological wellbeing, and colony stability.
The consequences of inadequate enrichment are well documented in both laboratory and private husbandry settings. Under-stimulated Multimammate Mice develop stereotypic behaviors including repetitive bar-chewing, excessive self-grooming that leads to bald patches, and obsessive running patterns along enclosure walls. In colony settings, boredom amplifies aggression as animals redirect their frustration toward cage mates, resulting in bite wounds, chronic stress, and social destabilization that can culminate in serious injury or death of subordinate individuals.
Effective enrichment for this species targets multiple behavioral categories simultaneously. Physical enrichment provides opportunities for locomotion, climbing, and burrowing. Cognitive enrichment challenges the animal to solve problems, typically in the context of food acquisition.
