Any enclosure selection must therefore account not only for the current number of animals but for the realistic trajectory of population growth within the coming weeks. A pair of Mastomys can produce a litter of eight to twenty pups every three to four weeks, and daughters from those litters reach sexual maturity within six to eight weeks. Starting with an oversized enclosure is always a better strategy than upgrading reactively as the colony outgrows its space.

Glass aquariums with secure mesh lids are the most popular housing choice among experienced Multimammate Mouse keepers. A forty-gallon breeder tank provides adequate floor space for a small colony of four to six adults and offers several practical advantages over wire cages, including superior bedding containment, draft protection, and the ability to maintain a deeper substrate layer for burrowing. The breeder-style aquarium, which is wider and shallower than a standard aquarium of equivalent volume, is preferred because Mastomys are terrestrial rodents that benefit more from floor space than from vertical height.

Wire cages designed for rats can also be used, provided the bar spacing does not exceed one-quarter inch. Multimammate Mice are smaller and more flexible than domestic rats, and even adult animals can squeeze through gaps that appear too narrow for their body size. Wire cages offer superior ventilation and make it easier to attach water bottles, shelves, and hanging enrichment items, but they scatter bedding aggressively when mice dig and burrow, creating housekeeping challenges in the surrounding area. Cage clips and locks should be robust, as Mastomys are surprisingly strong for their size and can lift lightweight wire cage lids.

Plastic bin cages, constructed by modifying large storage totes with ventilation panels cut into the lid and sides and covered with hardware cloth, offer a cost-effective alternative for keepers managing multiple colonies. These bins provide good bedding depth, are easy to clean, and stack efficiently in limited spaces. The primary drawback is reduced visibility, which makes it harder to observe colony dynamics and identify health issues early. Ventilation must be generous, as plastic does not breathe, and ammonia concentrations from urine-soaked bedding can rise rapidly in an under-ventilated bin.

Substrate & Bedding

Substrate selection is one of the most consequential housing decisions a Multimammate Mouse keeper will make, because Mastomys spend the majority of their active hours in direct contact with their bedding and engage in extensive burrowing and nest-building behavior. The ideal substrate must be absorbent enough to manage urine output from a colony of multiple animals, safe for respiratory systems that are sensitive to dust and volatile compounds, and structurally capable of supporting burrow tunnels that do not collapse immediately after construction.

Paper-based bedding products made from unbleached, unscented recycled paper pulp are widely regarded as the safest and most versatile substrate for Multimammate Mice. These products expand significantly when removed from the bag, are virtually dust-free, and absorb moisture effectively without becoming sodden. A substrate depth of three to four inches is recommended as a minimum to allow meaningful burrowing, though many keepers provide six inches or more in at least one section of the enclosure to encourage the construction of elaborate tunnel networks that are characteristic of wild Mastomys populations.

Aspen shavings are a suitable alternative substrate that is generally more affordable than paper-based bedding when purchased in bulk. Kiln-dried aspen is low in aromatic oils and produces minimal dust compared to other wood-based substrates, making it safe for rodent respiratory systems. However, aspen shavings do not hold burrow structure as well as paper-based bedding, and they are less absorbent per unit volume, meaning more frequent substrate changes may be necessary in colony settings with high urine output.

Cedar and pine shavings must be avoided entirely. Both wood types contain phenolic compounds, specifically plicatic acid in cedar and abietic acid in pine, that are released as volatile organic gases from freshly cut shavings. These compounds irritate the respiratory epithelium of small rodents and have been linked to elevated liver enzyme levels, chronic respiratory inflammation, and reduced immune function in long-term exposure studies. Even heat-treated or kiln-dried pine shavings, while somewhat safer than raw pine, still carry enough residual aromatic oil to pose a risk to animals as small as Multimammate Mice, and the consensus among exotic veterinarians and experienced breeders is that no form of softwood shaving is appropriate for rodent housing.

Ventilation & Climate Control

Adequate ventilation is the most frequently overlooked aspect of Multimammate Mouse housing, and it is the single greatest determinant of respiratory health in colony settings. Ammonia, produced by bacterial breakdown of urea in soiled bedding, is the primary airborne threat in any rodent enclosure. Temperature management is relatively straightforward for Multimammate Mice, which tolerate a broad range of ambient temperatures consistent with typical indoor living environments. The optimal range is sixty-eight to seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit. Mastomys are native to tropical and subtropical Africa and do not tolerate sustained cold well; temperatures below sixty degrees Fahrenheit can suppress immune function, reduce breeding activity, and cause torpor in extreme cases. Humidity should be maintained between forty and sixty percent for optimal health. Excessively dry air, common in heated homes during winter months, can contribute to dry skin, ear tip necrosis, and increased respiratory irritation from airborne bedding particles. Overly humid environments promote bacterial and fungal growth in the substrate and on enclosure surfaces, accelerate ammonia production, and can contribute to skin infections in animals with dense fur. A standalone hygrometer placed near the enclosure provides the keeper with the information needed to make seasonal adjustments, whether that means running a humidifier in winter or improving ventilation during humid summer months.

Enclosure Furniture & Layout

The interior layout of a Multimammate Mouse enclosure should be designed around the species' natural behavioral repertoire, which includes burrowing, nesting in enclosed spaces, running along established routes, climbing low structures, and foraging across a wide area. An enclosure that is simply filled with deep bedding and nothing else fails to provide the environmental complexity that promotes psychological health and reduces stress-related behaviors such as excessive grooming, fighting, or repetitive wire-chewing.

Hide structures are the most important furnishing category for Mastomys. Every animal in the colony should have access to at least one enclosed hiding space, though in practice providing more hides than there are animals reduces territorial disputes over preferred resting spots. Wooden hide boxes, ceramic igloos, half-logs, and coconut shell halves all serve well. Hides should have multiple entry and exit points when possible, as single-opening hides can trap subordinate animals when a dominant individual blocks the entrance, leading to stress and potential injury during confrontations.

Nesting material should be provided in addition to the substrate bedding. Multimammate Mice are avid nest builders that construct elaborate communal nests in which the entire colony sleeps during the day. Unscented facial tissue, plain unbleached paper towels torn into strips, and commercially available paper nesting fluff are all suitable materials. Cotton-based nesting products, including those marketed specifically for small animals, should be avoided because cotton fibers do not dissolve when ingested and can cause intestinal blockages, and loose threads can wrap around limbs and tails, restricting circulation and causing tissue necrosis.

Platforms and shelves made from untreated solid wood, cork bark, or food-safe ceramic add horizontal surface area and create micro-territories within the enclosure that help manage social dynamics in larger colonies. These structures should be positioned at varying heights but need not be excessively tall, as Mastomys are not strong climbers compared to species like deer mice or dormice and can injure themselves falling from significant heights. A maximum platform height of six to eight inches above the substrate surface, with soft bedding below to cushion any falls, strikes a reasonable balance between enrichment and safety.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Establishing a consistent cleaning routine is essential for maintaining air quality, controlling odor, and preventing disease transmission within a Multimammate Mouse colony. However, overcleaning is nearly as problematic as undercleaning for this species, because Mastomys rely heavily on scent marking to establish social hierarchies, define territories within the enclosure, and identify colony members. Removing all familiar scent cues simultaneously by performing a complete enclosure strip and sterilization can trigger intense stress responses, fighting among colony members who temporarily fail to recognize one another, and disrupted breeding behavior.

A spot-cleaning schedule performed every one to two days is the foundation of effective maintenance. This involves removing visibly soiled bedding patches, particularly in established latrine areas where urine and feces accumulate, clearing any hoarded fresh food that has begun to spoil, and wiping down water bottle spouts and food dishes. Spot cleaning takes only a few minutes per enclosure and dramatically extends the interval between full substrate changes by controlling ammonia at its source without disturbing the overall scent landscape of the habitat.

Full substrate changes should be performed every seven to fourteen days depending on colony size, enclosure volume, substrate depth, and ventilation quality. During a full change, approximately one-third of the old bedding should be retained and mixed into the fresh substrate to preserve familiar colony scent markers. Nest material that is dry and unsoiled can also be returned to the enclosure for the same reason. All hard furnishings, platforms, and hide structures should be wiped down with a rodent-safe disinfectant, rinsed thoroughly, and dried before being returned. Avoid phenol-based cleaners, bleach solutions stronger than a one-to-thirty dilution, and any product with a strong residual fragrance.

The enclosure itself should receive a thorough deep clean once per month, during which the animals are temporarily housed in a secure holding container with familiar bedding, a hide, a water source, and adequate ventilation. During this monthly clean, the enclosure walls, floor, and any permanent fixtures should be scrubbed with a dilute vinegar solution or a veterinary-grade disinfectant formulated for use around small animals. All surfaces must be rinsed multiple times and allowed to air-dry completely before fresh substrate is added and the colony is returned. Deep cleaning days are also ideal opportunities to inspect the enclosure for cracks, corrosion on mesh components, loose clips, and any developing weak points that could become escape routes.

Multi-Level & Colony Housing

Housing Multimammate Mice in larger colony configurations requires a fundamentally different approach to enclosure design than housing a single pair or a small group. Multi-level enclosures offer a practical solution for expanding usable space without increasing the enclosure's floor footprint. Wire shelving systems designed for ferret or rat cages can be adapted for Multimammate Mouse colonies, provided that ramp angles are gentle, ramp surfaces are solid rather than wire mesh, and fall distances are limited to eight inches or less onto soft substrate. Mesh flooring on upper levels should be avoided entirely, as wire mesh causes bumblefoot lesions and traps toes and tails. Managing breeding in colony settings is the most significant challenge Multimammate Mouse keepers face, and housing design plays a direct role. Same-sex colonies eliminate the breeding question entirely and are recommended for keepers who do not have a plan for responsibly placing offspring. Mixed-sex colonies will produce litters continuously and can grow from a manageable group to an overcrowded situation within a matter of weeks. Keepers who maintain mixed-sex colonies must have a clear strategy for separating sexes, rehoming surplus animals, or expanding housing capacity on a timeline that matches the colony's reproductive output.

Connected enclosure systems, in which two or more tanks or bins are linked by tubing to create a larger contiguous living space, offer an elegant solution for growing colonies. These systems allow the keeper to add capacity incrementally by connecting an additional enclosure when the population expands, rather than migrating the entire colony to a single larger habitat. The connecting tubes should be at least two inches in internal diameter to prevent traffic jams and territorial bottlenecks, and each connected unit should contain its own water source, food station, and hide structures so that no animal is forced to traverse the entire system to access basic resources.
