Nesting materials should be offered in a separate container within the enclosure, allowing the birds to select and arrange materials according to their own preferences. Direct sunlight through a window can raise the temperature inside a cage dramatically above ambient room temperature, creating a heat trap that is dangerous in warm months. Light cycle management influences molting, breeding behavior, and overall hormonal balance. Spotted Doves exposed to consistent long photoperiods may enter a state of chronic reproductive readiness that is physically taxing, particularly for hens. Allowing the light cycle to follow natural seasonal variation, or using timers to create an approximate twelve-to-fourteen-hour light period in summer and ten-to-twelve hours in winter, supports healthy hormonal cycling and gives the bird's reproductive system a natural rest period during shorter days.
