Adults typically weigh well under one pound, with some exhibition-class birds weighing as little as eight ounces. At that scale, even small imbalances in protein, fat, or micronutrient intake can produce outsized consequences. Metabolic rate per unit of body mass is higher in very small birds, which means Seramas burn through calories faster than larger breeds and are less tolerant of nutritional gaps.
Protein requirements for Seramas follow the general poultry pattern but deserve careful calibration by life stage. Growing chicks need feed with a protein content in the range of twenty to twenty-two percent to support feather development and skeletal growth. Laying hens benefit from sixteen to eighteen percent protein with adequate calcium for eggshell formation. Non-breeding adults can be maintained on a slightly lower protein ration, though dropping below fourteen percent risks muscle wasting and poor feather condition. Because Seramas are often kept as companion birds rather than production animals, owners sometimes underestimate their protein needs, defaulting to scratch grains that fall well short of minimum requirements.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is critical, particularly for hens in lay. Serama hens produce eggs that are proportionally large relative to their body size, placing considerable demand on calcium reserves. A diet deficient in calcium will lead to thin-shelled or shell-less eggs, egg binding, and progressive bone weakness. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio should remain in the range of two-to-one to ensure proper absorption, and supplemental calcium in the form of oyster shell or limestone grit should always be available free-choice so that hens can self-regulate their intake.
Vitamins A, D, and E are particularly important for Seramas kept indoors, as many owners house these birds inside for at least part of the year due to their sensitivity to cold and damp conditions. Without adequate sunlight exposure, vitamin D synthesis drops, impairing calcium metabolism regardless of dietary calcium levels. A feed formulated with supplemental vitamin D3, or a separate vitamin supplement added to the water, helps close this gap. Vitamin A supports respiratory and reproductive health, while vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress, which is especially relevant for birds under the physiological strain of laying or molting.
