Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by single-celled protozoal organisms belonging to the genus Eimeria and related genera that infect the intestinal tract of birds. These microscopic parasites invade and damage the cells lining the intestine, causing inflammation, impaired nutrient absorption, and in severe cases, life-threatening hemorrhage and dehydration. Coccidiosis represents one of the most economically significant parasitic diseases in poultry production and is also an important health concern for companion birds, wild birds, and aviary collections worldwide.
The disease develops when birds ingest coccidia oocysts, the hardy egg-like structures shed in the droppings of infected birds. Once ingested, these oocysts release organisms that invade intestinal cells, reproduce rapidly, and cause progressive damage to the intestinal lining. The extent of damage depends on the number of oocysts ingested, the specific species of coccidia involved, and the bird's immune status. While low-level exposure may produce mild or subclinical infection, heavy exposure or infection in immunocompromised birds can result in severe, sometimes fatal disease.
Coccidiosis significantly impacts affected birds through multiple mechanisms. Intestinal damage impairs nutrient absorption, leading to weight loss and poor condition even when food intake appears normal. Severe infections cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and anemia that can rapidly debilitate small birds. Young birds are particularly vulnerable due to their immature immune systems and higher relative metabolic demands. In aviary settings and breeding facilities, coccidiosis outbreaks can spread rapidly and cause significant mortality if not promptly recognized and addressed.
With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, coccidiosis is generally a treatable condition, though the prognosis depends heavily on the severity of infection at the time treatment begins. Early detection is essential for optimal outcomes, as advanced disease may cause permanent intestinal damage and secondary complications. Anticoccidial medications are highly effective when used properly, and supportive care helps birds recover from the effects of infection. Prevention through good hygiene practices and appropriate management remains the most effective approach to controlling coccidiosis in bird populations.
