Tall, narrow cages marketed as parrot towers are a poor fit for this species despite their generous cubic volume, because the usable flight corridor is too short.

Bar spacing is a non-negotiable safety parameter. Eastern Rosellas require bar spacing of one-half to five-eighths of an inch. Wider spacing, common in cages designed for larger parrots, allows a rosella to push its head through the bars and become trapped, which can result in strangulation or severe neck injury. Natural hardwood branches with varying diameters between half an inch and one inch exercise the foot muscles through constant grip adjustments and help prevent the pressure sores that develop when a bird stands on uniform dowel perches for extended periods. Eucalyptus, manzanita, java wood, and fruit tree branches that have not been sprayed with pesticides are all excellent choices.

Perch placement should maximize the available flight path within the cage or aviary. Positioning perches at opposite ends of the enclosure, at slightly different heights, encourages the bird to fly between them rather than simply sidestepping along a single bar. Avoid cluttering the center of the cage with perches or toys that interrupt the flight corridor. The open central space is the bird's runway, and preserving it is more valuable than filling every available spot with accessories.

Rope perches and flexible spiral perches serve a supplementary role. They provide different grip textures and can be positioned at angles that natural branches cannot easily maintain. Cotton rope perches should be inspected regularly for fraying, as loose threads can entangle toes and cause constriction injuries. Synthetic rope perches with tighter weaves pose less fraying risk but may lack the comfortable give that cotton provides. Any rope perch showing significant wear should be replaced immediately rather than trimmed.

Concrete and mineral perches are often recommended for nail maintenance, and they do serve that function when placed where the bird will stand on them occasionally. However, these hard, abrasive surfaces should never be the primary perch because prolonged standing on them causes foot pad irritation and bumblefoot. Positioning a single concrete perch near a food or water station, where the bird visits regularly but does not roost for extended periods, strikes the right balance between nail maintenance and foot health.

Substrate and Cleaning

The substrate lining the cage or aviary floor plays a direct role in hygiene management and respiratory health. For indoor cages, plain newsprint or butcher paper is the most practical substrate choice. Paper is inexpensive, allows daily visual inspection of droppings for health monitoring, and can be changed in under a minute. Commercially printed newspaper is also safe, as modern vegetable-based inks are nontoxic, though unprinted paper provides a cleaner visual baseline for assessing droppings.

Wood shavings and wood chip products require more careful selection. Kiln-dried pine shavings are generally considered safe for birds, as the kiln-drying process removes most of the volatile aromatic compounds that could irritate respiratory tissue. Cedar shavings, however, should never be used. The phenol compounds in cedar are toxic to birds and have been linked to respiratory distress, liver damage, and immune suppression. Aspen shavings are a safe alternative that produces less dust than pine and carries no aromatic oil concerns.

For outdoor aviaries, the floor substrate depends on the aviary design. Concrete or paver floors are the easiest to disinfect and prevent rodent burrowing beneath the aviary. Natural earth or grass floors provide a more enriching environment and support foraging behavior, but they are difficult to sanitize and harbor parasites, bacteria, and fungal spores that accumulate over time. A common compromise is a concrete pad covered with a layer of washed river gravel or pea stone, which drains well, discourages standing water, and can be raked and periodically replaced.

A thorough cage disinfection, including bars, tray, grate, and all removable components, should occur weekly for indoor cages and monthly for well-maintained aviaries. Quarterly deep cleans of the entire aviary structure, including shelters, nest boxes, and mesh, prevent the gradual buildup of pathogens that routine cleaning misses.

Eastern Rosellas are cavity nesters in the wild, using tree hollows, fence post cavities, and similar enclosed spaces for egg laying and chick rearing. Providing an appropriate nest box is essential for any breeding program and is appreciated even by non-breeding birds as a roosting shelter and security retreat. A standard rosella nest box measures approximately eight inches square by eighteen to twenty inches deep, with an entry hole of three inches in diameter positioned near the top of the front panel.

Healthy, acclimatized adults can withstand overnight temperatures down to the mid-twenties Fahrenheit without supplemental heating, provided they have access to a dry, wind-protected shelter with roosting perches. This cold hardiness makes them well-suited to outdoor aviary keeping in many climates where tropical parrots would require heated indoor housing.

Heat poses a greater risk than cold for this species. In the wild, rosellas avoid the hottest part of the day by retreating to shaded canopy areas and reducing activity. Aviary design must account for summer heat management through shade cloth over the exposed flight area, shade-producing vegetation planted around the aviary perimeter, and misting systems or shallow water baths that allow the birds to cool themselves. Indoor birds in air-conditioned rooms rarely face heat stress, but those in rooms without climate control near windows receiving direct sun can overheat quickly.

Winter management for outdoor aviaries in cold climates centers on wind protection and dry shelter rather than active heating. A fully enclosed shelter section with solid walls and a weather-tight roof provides the microclimate that rosellas need. Supplemental heat from a ceramic heat emitter or low-wattage infrared panel mounted safely above the roosting area can be added for particularly severe cold snaps or for young, sick, or elderly birds that may lack the body condition to thermoregulate independently.

Seasonal light cycles influence molt timing, breeding readiness, and overall hormonal balance. Rosellas kept indoors under constant artificial lighting may develop chronic hormonal disruption that manifests as persistent egg laying in hens, aggression in cocks, and abnormal molt patterns in both sexes. Mimicking natural photoperiod changes by adjusting cage covers or room lighting schedules throughout the year supports healthy endocrine function. Outdoor aviary birds naturally receive appropriate light cycle cues and rarely exhibit these photoperiod-related problems.
