The medication is typically administered once or twice daily and is often given with food to improve absorption and reduce potential gastrointestinal upset. The onset of diuretic effect is gradual, taking several days to reach full effect, distinguishing it from faster-acting diuretics like furosemide.
The use of spironolactone in dogs requires veterinary supervision and regular monitoring, particularly of kidney function and potassium levels. While the potassium-sparing effect is beneficial for dogs also receiving potassium-wasting diuretics like furosemide, it can potentially lead to hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels) if not properly monitored, especially in dogs with kidney disease.
