Many dogs with mild valve disease live normal lives with minimal symptoms for years. As regurgitation worsens, the heart compensates by enlarging, maintaining adequate blood flow despite the leaky valve. Eventually, compensatory mechanisms fail, and the dog develops congestive heart failure with fluid accumulation in the lungs or abdomen. The progression from early murmur detection to heart failure typically spans years, though some dogs progress rapidly while others remain stable. Treatment for mitral valve disease has advanced significantly, offering dogs and their owners hope for extended quality life even after diagnosis. While the valve degeneration itself cannot be reversed with medication, drugs that reduce cardiac workload, manage fluid accumulation, and support heart function significantly slow disease progression and control symptoms. Surgical valve repair, once limited to human medicine, is now available at specialized centers for select canine patients.
