Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid hormone normally produced by the outer layer of the adrenal glands in response to signals from the renin-angiotensin system, which monitors blood pressure and sodium balance. Under normal conditions, aldosterone acts on the kidneys to promote sodium retention and potassium excretion, helping maintain appropriate fluid balance and blood pressure. In hyperaldosteronism, this regulatory system becomes dysregulated, with aldosterone production occurring excessively and often autonomously, independent of the body's actual needs. The impact of hyperaldosteronism on a dog's health extends across multiple body systems due to the widespread effects of electrolyte imbalance and high blood pressure. The characteristic hypokalemia, or low blood potassium, causes progressive muscle weakness that may initially appear as exercise intolerance or reluctance to move before progressing to an inability to stand or lift the head. The metabolic alkalosis that accompanies potassium depletion further disrupts normal cellular function.
