Diamond Pythons mature slowly, and breeding an animal before it is genuinely ready is the most common cause of failed clutches, egg binding, and permanent damage to a female. Males become capable of successful breeding at around two and a half to three years, provided they are well grown and in good condition. Females should not be bred before four years of age, and many experienced keepers wait until five. Age alone is insufficient; a female should be at least five and a half to six feet in length and carry a body mass in the region of two and a half to three kilograms in solid, muscular condition before she is considered.
Condition, not simply size, determines readiness. A breeding female must have substantial fat reserves because producing a clutch draws enormously on her energy stores, frequently costing twenty to thirty percent of her pre-breeding body mass by the time she has laid and completed incubation. She should be conditioned through the preceding spring and summer with regular meals to build those reserves, without being pushed into obesity, which is itself a cause of reproductive failure. A female that enters winter thin should be given the year off.
Both animals must be unambiguously healthy. Screen for respiratory disease, snake mites, and internal parasites, and in any collection that takes in outside animals, consider serpentovirus testing before pairing, since the stress of breeding readily converts a subclinical infection into an outbreak. Neither animal should be recovering from illness or injury, and neither should have shown any neurological or wasting sign suggestive of Diamond Python Syndrome, both because the condition compromises the animal and because there is reasonable concern that susceptibility carries a heritable component.
Genetic planning deserves serious thought in this subspecies. The captive Diamond Python population outside Australia in particular descends from a limited founder base, and inbreeding depression is widely suspected as a contributing factor in reproductive failure, hatchling deformity, and possibly in Diamond Python Syndrome itself. Keep and consult lineage records, avoid pairing closely related animals, and be clear about whether your stock is pure Morelia spilota spilota or an intergrade with Coastal Carpet Python. Deliberate outcrossing to unrelated Diamond lines is valuable; accidental intergrade production sold as pure Diamond stock is not, and honest documentation of what you produce is a basic obligation to whoever keeps those hatchlings for the next quarter century.
