This is a temperate species from coastal New South Wales, where breeding follows a genuinely cold season, and the cooling period drives spermatogenesis in males and follicular development in females. Breeders should plan the cycle so that cooling occupies the local winter and pairing follows in early spring, whichever hemisphere they are in.

Begin conditioning in the preceding autumn by ensuring both animals reach good weight, then cease feeding two to three weeks before cooling starts so the digestive tract is empty. If no interest develops after several introductions across six to eight weeks, separate the animals and try again the following season rather than persisting, as an insufficiently deep cooling period is the most likely explanation and cannot be corrected mid-season.

Ovulation, Pre-Lay Shed, and Oviposition

Ovulation is usually visible and is the first firm confirmation that a female is gravid. It presents as a pronounced swelling through the posterior third to half of the body, often described as looking as though the snake has swallowed a large meal, lasting roughly twenty-four to forty-eight hours before the mass redistributes forward. Many females also adopt an unusual posture during this period, sometimes lying inverted or in tight, awkward coils. From ovulation, the countdown to laying is reasonably predictable, and the date should be recorded carefully.

She also shields the eggs from desiccation with her own body and adjusts her coils in response to conditions. Maternal incubation is viable and rewarding but demands commitment from the keeper. She will not feed and will lose considerable condition. Artificial incubation is the more common approach and offers greater control. Remove the eggs carefully within twelve to twenty-four hours of laying, marking the top of each egg with a soft pencil so orientation is never lost, and transfer the adhered mass intact rather than separating individual eggs, which can tear membranes. Incubate at 87 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit in a substrate of vermiculite or perlite mixed with water at roughly a one to one ratio by weight, or use a suspended substrateless method with a water reservoir beneath. Expect hatching at approximately fifty to sixty days.

Monitor the clutch without handling it more than necessary. Healthy eggs remain firm, white, and slightly turgid; a modest dimpling late in incubation is normal, while early collapse suggests dehydration and requires a humidity adjustment. Offer clean water immediately and consider a shallow supervised soak. Begin feeding with a modest meal a few days after laying, or a few days after the clutch is removed if she has been brooding, and then feed regularly with appropriately sized items rather than attempting to restore weight with oversized prey, which invites regurgitation in a weakened animal.

A veterinary examination after laying is prudent, particularly for a first-time female or one that had a difficult oviposition. The examination should confirm that no eggs have been retained, assess hydration and body condition, and check for prolapse, which occasionally follows a strenuous laying. Full recovery of pre-breeding condition typically takes six to twelve months. Most experienced breeders rest a female for at least one full season between clutches, and breeding a female in consecutive years is a reliable way to shorten her life.

The male's recovery is less demanding but not trivial. Males frequently fast throughout the breeding season and may lose ten to fifteen percent of their body mass. Prepare separate neonatal containers, a supply of appropriately sized frozen prey, and a realistic plan for placement. Be candid with buyers about the subspecies' particular requirements, especially the need for cool temperatures and annual seasonal cycling, because a Diamond Python sold to someone who will keep it hot year round is a Diamond Python likely to develop neurological disease.
