A Diamond Python is generally considered adult from around three to four years in males and four to five years in females, though the animal continues to gain length and mass at a slowing rate well beyond that point. Most captive adults settle between six and eight feet in total length, with exceptional females occasionally approaching or slightly exceeding nine feet. Mass at maturity typically falls between two and four kilograms, with large, well-conditioned females reaching five to six kilograms. These are substantial snakes, but they are considerably more slender and more muscular than a boa or a ball python of comparable length, reflecting a body plan built for climbing rather than for bulk.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and becomes obvious in adulthood. Females are longer, heavier, and noticeably thicker through the body, while males remain more slender with proportionally longer tails and more prominent cloacal spurs, the vestigial pelvic limbs visible as small curved claws either side of the vent. Males typically top out around six feet where a female of the same clutch may reach eight. Neither sex is inherently more suitable as a captive, though large females require correspondingly larger enclosures and heavier furniture.

By full maturity the adult pattern is finally complete. The ground colour has darkened to a deep glossy black or blue-black, the pale juvenile blotching has resolved into the distinctive cream to bright yellow rosettes and diamond clusters across the dorsum, and individual yellow scales are scattered through the black in a speckled arrangement. Ventral scales are typically cream to yellow, sometimes with dark marbling. The head is broad and clearly distinct from the neck, with deep labial heat pits along the upper and lower jaws that allow the snake to detect endothermic prey in complete darkness.

Growth does not truly stop, but it becomes slow enough to be imperceptible from year to year. This means that weight in an adult Diamond Python is a stable and therefore highly informative parameter. Once an animal reaches maturity, establish its healthy baseline mass and monitor deviations from it. A mature Diamond Python that gains fifteen percent over a year is being overfed; one that loses ten percent outside a cooling cycle or a breeding season has a problem that needs investigating. In an animal that may live thirty years, this single number, tracked patiently, is the most useful diagnostic tool a keeper has.

Adult Feeding and Weight Management

Adult Diamond Pythons eat far less often than most keepers expect, and obesity is the most common welfare problem in the captive population of this subspecies. A mature animal in an appropriately sized enclosure needs one medium to large rat every fourteen to twenty-one days through the active season, and nothing at all through the cooling period. Prey should be sized to the snake's mid-body girth, producing a visible but modest bulge. Two smaller items are preferable to one oversized one, since an item substantially wider than the snake risks regurgitation and places unnecessary load on the digestive tract.

The consequences of overfeeding in this species are not cosmetic. Excess energy is deposited as coelomic fat and, in time, as hepatic lipid, and a fatty liver in a python compromises immune function, reproductive capacity, and the animal's ability to mobilise reserves during the winter fast. Visually, an overweight Diamond Python loses the gently triangular cross-section of a healthy climbing snake and becomes rounded or even oval in section, with fat rolls visible when it curves and a body that pads out rather than tapers toward the tail. It also climbs less, which compounds the problem.

Assess condition by feel and profile rather than by weight alone. A correctly conditioned adult has a firm, muscular body with the vertebral column palpable but not visible, no prominent lateral ridges, and a definite taper from mid-body to the vent. Skin should be taut without loose folds. When the animal bridges between two branches, the body should hold its own weight in a controlled arc rather than sagging. Adjust the feeding interval rather than the prey size when correcting condition, since lengthening the gap between meals is closer to the natural pattern of an ambush predator than reducing every meal.

Seasonal appetite variation in adults is dramatic and entirely normal. Feeding response is strongest in spring and early summer, moderate in late summer, and declines sharply through autumn. Many adult Diamond Pythons refuse food for two to four months across winter, and breeding males frequently fast for a similar span during the mating season without any cause for concern, provided muscle tone and hydration are maintained. Never offer live rodents to an adult python; a large rat can inflict severe injuries on a snake that does not immediately commit to a strike, and thawed prey warmed to a detectable surface temperature elicits an equally reliable response.

The Adult Enclosure and Its Furnishings

A full-grown Diamond Python needs an enclosure that respects its arboreal habit above all else. The practical minimum for an adult is six feet long by two feet deep by three feet tall, and taller is genuinely better for this subspecies. Front-opening enclosures in PVC, sealed plywood, or melamine are preferable to glass aquaria, both because they hold a thermal gradient more efficiently and because approaching a python from the side rather than from directly overhead reduces defensive responses. All doors and lids must lock, since an adult of this size is powerful enough to force a poorly fitted panel.

Interior furnishing should create a genuine three-dimensional landscape. Install heavy, securely mounted branches at multiple heights, at least one broad basking shelf positioned below the heat source, and cork rounds or hollow logs that a body of this diameter can actually enter. Diamond Pythons habitually rest draped across a fork with much of the body suspended, so anchor points must tolerate several kilograms of shifting load without moving. Provide a large water container heavy enough that it cannot be tipped and wide enough for the animal to submerge; adults soak periodically, especially before a shed.

Thermal management for an adult follows the same cool-leaning philosophy that governs every stage of this subspecies. A basking surface of 86 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit is ample, the warm ambient should sit around 78 to 82, the cool end at 70 to 75, and night temperatures should be permitted to fall to 62 to 68 degrees. Use overhead heat, either a radiant heat panel or a ceramic emitter, controlled by a proportional thermostat with an independent high-limit cut-out, and guard every heat source physically so a climbing snake cannot press against it. Verify basking surface temperatures with an infrared thermometer at the level the animal actually uses, not at the substrate.

Humidity should remain moderate, between 45 and 60 percent, rising during shed cycles. This is a dry sclerophyll forest species and it fares poorly in stagnant, saturated air, which promotes scale rot and respiratory disease. Substrate options include cypress mulch, aspen, coarse bark blends, or a bioactive soil mix; whichever is chosen, ensure real cross-ventilation. Provide a photoperiod that tracks the seasons, roughly fourteen hours of light in summer down to eight or nine in winter. Low-level UVB lighting is not strictly required but is increasingly favoured for this diurnally basking subspecies, and many keepers report improved activity and basking behaviour when it is provided.

The Annual Cooling Cycle

For an adult Diamond Python the annual cooling period, often called brumation, is not an optional enhancement for breeders. It is a core requirement of the subspecies, and its omission is the practice most consistently linked with Diamond Python Syndrome. Wild animals in coastal New South Wales spend the winter months in rock crevices, hollow logs, and roof cavities at body temperatures far below anything a typical vivarium offers, emerging only to bask on mild days. A captive adult held at summer temperatures for three decades is being denied a fundamental element of its biology.

Begin by withholding food for two to three weeks so the digestive tract is empty, since prey retained in a cooled snake will not be digested and can putrefy. Then, across three to four weeks, taper the photoperiod from summer length down to eight hours, reduce basking availability progressively, and finally withdraw supplemental heat. Target daytime ambient temperatures in the low to mid sixties Fahrenheit with night lows in the mid fifties, and hold that regime for eight to twelve weeks. Many keepers achieve this by moving the enclosure to an unheated room or a garage that tracks the outdoor season.

Throughout the cooling period, fresh water must always be available and the animal should be checked daily even though it will be almost entirely inactive. Offer no food. On mild days some animals will emerge and move about, and a brief low-intensity basking opportunity a few times per week is acceptable and mirrors wild behaviour. Reverse the process gradually over three to four weeks in the spring, restoring photoperiod and heat before offering the first small meal. Expect that first meal to be taken enthusiastically, and expect a shed within a few weeks of warming.

Certain animals should not be cooled, or should be cooled only under veterinary guidance: those significantly underweight, those with active respiratory infection or any unresolved illness, those recovering from injury or surgery, and animals in poor body condition after a demanding breeding season. Weigh the snake at the start and finish; a loss of five to eight percent across a full cycle is normal, while a greater loss suggests the cooling was too deep, too long, or applied to an animal that was not ready. Done properly, the annual cycle produces a Diamond Python with better appetite regulation, better muscle tone, more reliable shedding, and a markedly lower lifetime risk of neurological disease.

Behaviour, Activity, and Handling in Adulthood

Adult Diamond Pythons are among the more rewarding pythons to observe because they are genuinely active and genuinely visible. Activity is strongly seasonal and shifts through the year: in cooler months the snake is largely diurnal, hauling itself into a basking position in the morning and holding it for hours, while in the heat of summer it becomes crepuscular and nocturnal, moving through the branches at dusk and hunting after dark. A captive on a properly seasonal photoperiod will display this same shift, which is one of the more satisfying signs that the husbandry is right.

Hunting behaviour in this subspecies is ambush based and remarkably patient. Wild Diamond Pythons have been documented occupying a single ambush position for days or even weeks, waiting beside a mammal runway or beneath a bird's approach path. Captive adults reproduce this in miniature, selecting a favourite coil site and remaining there for extended periods. A snake that sits still for a week is not lethargic; a snake that roams the enclosure ceaselessly night after night is more likely to be signalling something wrong, typically an unsatisfactory thermal gradient, insufficient security, or a search for a mate.

Temperament in mature Diamond Pythons is generally calm. The defensive reflexes of the juvenile years typically fade by three or four, and most well-handled adults tolerate interaction without hissing or striking, though the subspecies retains a certain alertness and is rarely as inert as a ball python. Handle with the animal's weight fully supported across at least two points, allow it to move through your hands and arms, and never suspend a large python without something for it to grip. Sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes are ample, and handling should be avoided for at least seventy-two hours after a meal and during the blue phase of a shed cycle, when vision is impaired and defensiveness rises.

Handling should also pause during the cooling period and during breeding season, when males in particular become restless, may refuse food entirely, and can be uncharacteristically snappy. For an adult over about seven feet, the standard safety practice is a second person present during handling. This is less about aggression, which is rare, than about the mechanics of managing a strong animal that may anchor its tail around a fixture. Never handle a large constrictor around the neck or allow it to coil across the throat, and keep alcohol-based hand hygiene and thorough hand washing routine given the reptile carriage of Salmonella.

Adult Health Maintenance and Diamond Python Syndrome

Diamond Python Syndrome is the condition that defines veterinary discussion of this subspecies and it is overwhelmingly a disease of adults. The presentation is a progressive syndrome combining neurological signs with wasting: head tremors, star-gazing or persistent abnormal head posture, loss of coordination and an inability to climb reliably, repeated regurgitation, anorexia, and steady weight loss despite apparently adequate feeding. The aetiology is not fully resolved and has been variously attributed to chronic thermal excess, absence of seasonal cycling, nutritional imbalance, and inbreeding depression in a captive population founded on a narrow genetic base, but the strongest and most actionable association is with husbandry.

Because of that association, the response to early signs is both veterinary and environmental, and the environmental part must not be deferred. Lower the basking temperature, ensure a substantial night drop, restore or institute a full annual cooling cycle, reassess prey type and feeding frequency, and increase enclosure height and climbing opportunity. Animals identified early frequently stabilise or improve substantially under corrected conditions. Advanced cases with severe wasting and established neurological deficits carry a much poorer prognosis, which is why a keeper's threshold for acting on subtle coordination changes should be low.

Beyond this syndrome, adult Diamond Pythons are subject to the general disease burden of large captive pythons. Respiratory infection presents as open-mouth breathing, nasal discharge, audible clicking, and head elevation, and is usually secondary to excessive humidity, poor ventilation, or a cool end that is cold without a warm refuge. Infectious stomatitis appears as reddening, petechiae, or caseous material in the oral cavity. Dysecdysis, thermal burns from unguarded heat sources, and snake mites remain recurring problems. Serpentovirus, a nidovirus affecting the respiratory tract of pythons, is an important consideration for any collection taking in new animals, and quarantine with testing is the only reliable defence.

Preventive care for an adult should include an annual examination by a reptile-experienced veterinarian, a periodic faecal parasite screen, and baseline bloodwork at maturity so that later results can be compared against the animal's own values rather than against a broad species range. Maintain the written record of weight, feeding, shedding, and defecation through adulthood, note the dates of each cooling cycle, and photograph the animal in the same position annually to make gradual changes in condition visible. In a snake that may share three decades of a keeper's life, this unglamorous record-keeping is what converts good intentions into a demonstrably well-managed animal.
