Determining whether an Arabian mare or stallion is ready for breeding involves far more than simply reaching a certain age. While mares can become physiologically capable of reproduction as early as eighteen months, breeding at such a young age places enormous strain on a still-developing body. Most responsible Arabian breeders will not breed a mare until she is at least four years old, allowing her skeletal system, musculature, and overall physical condition to reach a level of maturity that can support the demands of pregnancy and lactation.
Physical readiness should be confirmed through a thorough breeding soundness examination performed by an equine reproductive veterinarian. For the mare, this includes a reproductive tract evaluation via ultrasound to assess uterine health, ovarian function, and overall reproductive anatomy. The veterinarian will check for any abnormalities that could complicate conception or pregnancy, including endometritis, cervical scarring, or structural irregularities. For the stallion, the exam includes an assessment of testicular size and consistency, sperm motility and morphology, and libido.
Genetic health screening is a critical step before committing any Arabian to a breeding program. The breed carries several known hereditary conditions, including severe combined immunodeficiency, lavender foal syndrome, cerebellar abiotrophy, and occipitoatlantoaxial malformation. DNA tests are available for these conditions, and responsible breeders test both the mare and stallion before breeding to avoid producing affected foals. Registries and breed organizations strongly encourage or require testing as part of their breeding guidelines.
Beyond the physical and genetic evaluation, the mental and behavioral temperament of both the mare and stallion should be considered. The Arabian breed standard places tremendous value on intelligence, willingness, and a kind disposition, and these traits are heritable. Breeding horses that exhibit extreme nervousness, aggression, or undesirable behavioral tendencies risks perpetuating those traits in future generations, regardless of how impressive the physical conformation may be.
