Breeding Munchkin cats is a serious undertaking that requires a thorough understanding of the breed's unique genetics, a commitment to health testing, and the resources to provide excellent care for the queen and her kittens. Munchkins should not be bred before they are fully mature, which typically means waiting until the queen is at least eighteen months to two years old. Males can be used for breeding once they reach full physical and sexual maturity, generally around twelve to eighteen months.

Before any breeding takes place, both the sire and dam should undergo comprehensive health screening. At minimum, this should include testing for feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, echocardiography to assess heart health, blood typing for neonatal isoerythrolysis risk, and a thorough orthopedic evaluation to assess the structural soundness of the limbs and spine. Queening Preparation

In the days leading up to the due date, take the queen's temperature rectally twice daily. A normal feline temperature is around 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. A drop to below 99 degrees typically indicates that labor will begin within 12 to 24 hours. The queen may also exhibit nesting behavior, decreased appetite, restlessness, and increased vocalization as labor approaches.

Postpartum Care

After the kittens are born, the queen's primary focus will be cleaning, nursing, and keeping her litter warm. Allow her to manage these tasks with minimal interference, stepping in only when necessary. Check that each kitten is breathing clearly, nursing within the first hour, and appears vigorous. Count the placentas to ensure one has been delivered for each kitten, as a retained placenta can cause serious infection.

The queen should be offered food and water shortly after the birth is complete. Her caloric needs during lactation are enormous, often two to three times her normal maintenance requirement, so provide unlimited access to high-quality kitten food and fresh water. Monitor her mammary glands daily for signs of mastitis, which include redness, swelling, heat, hardness, or pain. A queen with mastitis may refuse to nurse and needs immediate veterinary treatment.

Weigh each kitten daily for the first two weeks, then every few days thereafter. Consistent weight gain is the single most reliable indicator of neonatal health. A kitten that fails to gain or loses weight needs immediate attention, whether through supplemental feeding, veterinary evaluation, or both. Keep the queening area clean, warm, and quiet, changing bedding daily.

Monitor the queen for postpartum complications including continued straining that could indicate a retained kitten, heavy or foul-smelling vaginal discharge, lethargy, fever, or refusal to eat. A healthy queen should be attentive to her kittens, eating well, and gradually returning to normal behavior within a few days of the birth. Schedule a postpartum veterinary visit for the queen and her litter within the first week.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

The Munchkin breed carries unique ethical considerations that set it apart from nearly every other cat breed. The short-legged trait is caused by an autosomal dominant mutation, and the homozygous form, where a kitten inherits two copies of the Munchkin gene, is lethal. Embryos that are homozygous for the mutation do not survive, resulting in smaller litter sizes when two short-legged Munchkins are bred together. For this reason, responsible breeding programs never pair two short-legged Munchkins.
