A mature Black-Headed Caique reaches its full adult weight of approximately 150 to 170 grams by around two years of age, and maintaining this weight within a healthy range becomes a lifelong nutritional priority. Obesity is one of the most prevalent health issues in captive caiques, driven by a combination of their naturally enthusiastic appetite, their preference for calorie-dense seeds and nuts, and the sedentary lifestyle that captivity can impose if enrichment and exercise are not actively managed.
The adult caique's diet should center on a high-quality formulated pellet, which should account for approximately 60 to 70 percent of daily caloric intake. Pellets deliver balanced amino acids, vitamins, and minerals in every bite, eliminating the selective feeding behavior that occurs when birds are offered seed-based diets and pick out their favorites while ignoring the nutritionally important but less palatable components. If your bird was not weaned onto pellets as a juvenile, converting an adult caique to a pellet-based diet requires patience. Gradual mixing, offering pellets first thing in the morning when hunger is greatest, and removing competing seed dishes during transition periods are effective strategies.
Fresh produce should comprise approximately 25 to 30 percent of the daily diet. Adult caiques benefit from a rotating selection of vegetables and fruits that provides broad-spectrum micronutrients and dietary fiber. Emphasize vegetables over fruits, as the sugar content in many tropical fruits can contribute to weight gain and yeast overgrowth when fed in excess. Dark leafy greens, bell peppers, cooked sweet potato, broccoli florets, and snap peas are excellent choices that most caiques accept readily. Fruits such as blueberries, kiwi, and small amounts of mango or papaya add variety and serve as high-value treats during training.
Weigh your adult caique weekly on a gram-accurate scale, ideally at the same time of day before the first feeding. Establish a baseline weight when the bird is in known good health, and investigate any sustained deviation of more than five percent in either direction. Weight monitoring is particularly important because feathers and the bird's compact body shape can mask gradual fat accumulation that only becomes apparent when the bird is examined during a veterinary visit or when health problems emerge.
