This opportunistic infection affects the respiratory system, particularly the air sacs and lungs, and can disseminate to other organs in severe cases. African Grey parrots are considered one of the most susceptible psittacine species to this disease, making it a primary health concern for owners and avian veterinarians working with this species. The fungal spores that cause aspergillosis are ubiquitous in the environment, present in soil, decaying organic matter, and commonly found in improperly stored food or bedding materials, meaning all birds are regularly exposed but only those with compromised defenses typically develop clinical disease.
The development of aspergillosis in African Grey parrots typically occurs when the bird's immune system is compromised by stress, malnutrition, concurrent illness, or other factors that reduce natural resistance to fungal colonization. Aspergillus spores, which are inhaled during normal respiration, are normally cleared by a healthy immune system before they can establish infection. As the disease progresses, more obvious symptoms develop including breathing difficulty, voice changes, decreased appetite, weight loss, and general decline in condition. The extensive air sac system that makes birds such efficient breathers also means that aspergillosis can spread to affect bones, reproductive organs, and other structures adjacent to the air sacs. In severe cases, the fungus may disseminate through the bloodstream to affect organs including the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
The prognosis for African Grey parrots with aspergillosis depends heavily on the stage at which the disease is diagnosed and the aggressiveness of treatment initiated. Early detection, while challenging due to the subtle initial presentation, dramatically improves outcomes. Treatment typically involves prolonged antifungal medication therapy lasting months, sometimes combined with surgical debridement of accessible fungal lesions. Even with appropriate treatment, aspergillosis can be difficult to fully eradicate, and recurrence is possible if the bird's immune status declines or environmental fungal exposure continues. Prevention through maintaining excellent husbandry, optimal nutrition, and minimizing stress represents the most effective approach to protecting African Grey parrots from this serious disease.
