Black-Headed Caique chicks hatch after an incubation period of approximately 25 to 27 days, emerging as tiny, nearly helpless creatures weighing between 6 and 8 grams. The hatchling is blind, covered only in sparse white natal down, and entirely dependent on external warmth and parental or hand-feeder intervention for survival. Unlike precocial species that can move about shortly after hatching, caique chicks are fully altricial and will remain in the nest for several weeks before gaining any real independence.
During the first hours after hatching, the chick's yolk sac is still being absorbed through the abdomen. This yolk reserve provides essential nutrients and immune factors that sustain the chick until its first proper feeding. In a parent-raised setting, the hen will typically begin offering the first feeding within four to eight hours of hatch, delivering a thin, enzyme-rich crop secretion that primes the chick's gastrointestinal tract for digesting formula or regurgitated food. Hand-raisers should wait until the yolk sac is visibly absorbed and the abdomen appears smooth before attempting the first feeding, usually around eight to twelve hours post-hatch.
Temperature management is absolutely critical during this window. The chick must be maintained in a brooder set to 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity between 60 and 65 percent. Black-Headed Caique chicks are particularly susceptible to chilling because of their small body mass and minimal down coverage. Even a brief dip in brooder temperature can suppress the chick's metabolic rate, delay yolk absorption, and set the stage for crop stasis or bacterial infection.
Observe the hatchling closely for signs of vitality. A healthy Black-Headed Caique chick will respond to gentle tactile stimulation near the beak with a feeding response, produce small but formed droppings within the first several hours, and maintain a pinkish skin color. Skin that appears grey, mottled, or overly red may indicate circulatory stress, temperature imbalance, or congenital issues and warrants immediate contact with an experienced avian veterinarian.
