Food allergy in dogs is an immune-mediated adverse reaction to one or more specific proteins present in the diet. Unlike food intolerance, which involves non-immunological mechanisms such as enzymatic deficiencies or pharmacological reactions to food components, a true food allergy involves activation of the immune system in response to a dietary protein that the body has incorrectly identified as harmful. This distinction is clinically important because the underlying mechanisms, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies differ between immunological and non-immunological adverse food reactions.
The immunological basis of canine food allergy involves sensitization of the immune system to specific protein molecules, known as allergens, that are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. During normal digestion, dietary proteins are broken down into small peptide fragments and individual amino acids that are absorbed without provoking an immune response. In food-allergic dogs, the gastrointestinal immune system mounts an inappropriate response to certain intact or partially digested proteins, producing allergen-specific immunoglobulin E antibodies and activating inflammatory pathways that produce clinical symptoms.
Food allergies can develop at any age, though onset most commonly occurs in dogs under one year of age or over six years of age. A common misconception among pet owners is that food allergies only develop in response to new foods. In reality, food allergies typically develop after prolonged exposure to the offending protein, often months to years of feeding the same diet without apparent problems. The immune system requires repeated exposure to become sensitized to a particular protein, which explains why dogs can suddenly become allergic to a food they have eaten without issue for an extended period.
Food allergy accounts for a significant proportion of allergic skin disease in dogs, though its exact prevalence is debated in the veterinary literature. Current estimates suggest that food allergy is responsible for approximately ten to fifteen percent of all allergic dermatitis cases in dogs and represents the third most common type of canine allergy after flea allergy dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Many dogs with food allergy also have concurrent atopic dermatitis or flea allergy, making accurate diagnosis and management more complex.
