Sarcoptic mange, commonly known as canine scabies, is a highly contagious parasitic skin disease caused by the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis. This condition represents one of the most intensely pruritic skin diseases affecting dogs, causing extreme itching that significantly impacts the affected animal's quality of life and well-being. The mites burrow into the superficial layers of the skin where they complete their life cycle, causing severe inflammation and allergic reactions that produce the characteristic intense scratching associated with this condition. The causative organism, Sarcoptes scabiei, is a tiny eight-legged mite that cannot be seen with the naked eye but causes tremendous discomfort through its burrowing and reproductive activities within the skin. Female mites tunnel through the outer layers of skin to lay eggs, creating burrows that trigger intense inflammatory and allergic responses. The mites complete their entire life cycle on the host within approximately two to three weeks, with populations increasing rapidly on untreated animals. Early diagnosis leads to faster resolution and reduced suffering, though the diagnostic process can sometimes be challenging because mites may be difficult to find on skin scrapings despite obvious clinical signs.
