Allergic dermatitis is one of the most frequently diagnosed dermatological conditions in veterinary medicine, affecting a significant percentage of the canine population worldwide. The condition arises when a dog's immune system mounts an exaggerated inflammatory response to substances that are otherwise harmless, such as pollen, dust mites, certain food proteins, or materials that come into direct contact with the skin. This hypersensitivity reaction triggers a cascade of immunological events that manifest primarily as skin inflammation, intense itching, and progressive dermatological changes if left unmanaged.
The pathophysiology of allergic dermatitis involves the interaction between allergens and the immune system at the level of the skin barrier. In affected dogs, allergens penetrate the epidermis and are recognized by antigen-presenting cells known as Langerhans cells and dermal dendritic cells. These cells process the allergens and present them to T-lymphocytes, which then initiate an immune response. In genetically predisposed dogs, this response is skewed toward a Th2-type immune reaction, resulting in the production of allergen-specific immunoglobulin E antibodies that bind to mast cells in the skin.
When the dog is re-exposed to the offending allergen, the IgE-coated mast cells undergo degranulation, releasing histamine, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and various cytokines into the surrounding tissue. These inflammatory mediators cause vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and stimulation of sensory nerve fibers, producing the characteristic pruritus and erythema associated with the condition. Over time, chronic inflammation leads to secondary changes in the skin, including thickening, hyperpigmentation, and lichenification.
Allergic dermatitis is broadly classified into three main subtypes based on the route of allergen exposure: atopic dermatitis, which involves inhalant and percutaneous allergens; food allergy dermatitis, which is triggered by dietary proteins; and contact dermatitis, which results from direct skin exposure to irritating or allergenic substances. Many dogs suffer from overlapping forms, making diagnosis and management particularly challenging.
