Hypotrichosis is a congenital condition in dogs characterized by abnormally sparse or thin hair coverage present from birth or appearing very early in life. The term hypotrichosis literally means reduced hair and describes a spectrum of conditions where dogs have significantly fewer hair follicles than normal, produce hair that is structurally abnormal, or have follicles that fail to develop properly. Unlike conditions causing hair loss later in life, dogs with hypotrichosis are born with the predisposition for reduced coat coverage, though the full extent may not be apparent until the puppy coat matures.
The underlying basis for hypotrichosis is genetic, with affected puppies inheriting mutations that disrupt normal hair follicle development or function. Several distinct forms of hypotrichosis are recognized in dogs, each caused by different genetic defects and affecting different aspects of hair follicle biology. Some forms result in complete absence of hair in certain body regions, while others cause diffuse thinning throughout the coat. The inheritance patterns vary depending on the specific mutation involved, with autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, and X-linked inheritance all documented in different forms and breeds.
Certain breeds have higher prevalence of hypotrichosis due to genetic mutations that have become established in their gene pools. Intentionally hairless breeds like Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintli, and American Hairless Terrier represent extreme forms of genetically determined hair reduction that are considered breed characteristics rather than defects in those populations. In other breeds, hypotrichosis represents an unwanted genetic condition that breeders work to eliminate. The presentation ranges from mild coat thinning that may be barely noticeable to severe hair reduction that is immediately obvious.
Although hypotrichosis has no cure, the prognosis for affected dogs is generally excellent regarding overall health and longevity. The condition is primarily cosmetic and does not affect internal organ function, cause pain, or reduce lifespan. Management focuses on protecting exposed skin from sun damage and environmental hazards, maintaining skin health, and preventing secondary complications. Understanding the genetic basis of the condition is important for breeding decisions to prevent producing additional affected puppies.
