Harvest mites, commonly known as chiggers, berry bugs, or harvest bugs, are tiny parasitic mites that cause intense itching and skin irritation in dogs during their larval stage. The species most commonly affecting dogs in North America and Europe is Neotrombicula autumnalis, though several related species exist in different geographic regions. These seasonal parasites are most active during late summer and autumn, earning them their common name of harvest mites due to their peak activity coinciding with harvest season. Unlike many other mites that spend their entire life on hosts, only the larval stage of harvest mites is parasitic, making their biology and control unique among common canine parasites.
Harvest mite larvae are nearly microscopic, measuring less than half a millimeter, though their distinctive orange or red-orange color can make clusters visible on affected dogs, particularly in areas with thin fur. The larvae emerge from eggs laid in soil and vegetation, climbing onto low-growing plants where they wait to attach to passing hosts. Once on a dog, they move to areas of thin skin, attaching to feed on tissue fluids rather than blood. The larvae do not burrow into skin but instead inject digestive enzymes that liquefy tissue cells, creating a feeding tube called a stylostome through which they feed for several days before dropping off to continue their life cycle in the environment.
The impact of harvest mite infestation on dogs primarily involves intense itching and skin irritation at attachment sites. While the mites themselves are relatively harmless and do not transmit diseases in most regions, the immune reaction to their feeding causes considerable discomfort. Dogs may develop severe itching that persists for days to weeks after the mites have detached. Secondary skin damage from scratching and bacterial infections from skin trauma are common complications. Some dogs appear to develop increased sensitivity with repeated exposures, experiencing more severe reactions to subsequent infestations.
Treatment for harvest mite infestation focuses on killing any attached larvae and managing the inflammatory response causing itching. Modern antiparasitic products effective against mites can eliminate attached larvae, though relief from itching may require additional anti-inflammatory treatment. Prevention through avoiding infested areas when possible and using effective antiparasitic products during peak season reduces infestation risk.
